What is a remote sales engineer?

A Remote Sales Engineer is a professional who combines technical expertise with sales skills to support the sales process of complex products or services, typically in fields like technology, engineering, or manufacturing. Working remotely, they collaborate with sales teams and directly with clients to understand customer needs, deliver technical presentations or product demonstrations, and help design solutions. They often serve as a bridge between the sales and engineering teams, ensuring customer requirements are accurately communicated and addressed. This role requires strong communication skills, technical knowledge, and the ability to work independently from a remote location.

What does a remote sales engineer do?

As a remote sales engineer, you work from home to sell technological and complex scientific services or products to businesses. You prepare and present information to customers and prospective clients regarding the services or products you sell. As part of your duties, you review and secure orders and assist the other sales team members with promotional projects. You also demonstrate products and services, modify and plan products to meet client needs, and help clients troubleshoot equipment issues. Your responsibilities also include recommending how to improve machinery or materials that can help customers to increase production or lower their costs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote sales engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Sales Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering or a related technical field, strong sales acumen, and typically a bachelor's degree. Familiarity with CRM systems like Salesforce, online meeting platforms, and product demonstration tools is essential. Exceptional communication, problem-solving abilities, and self-motivation help you effectively engage clients and manage remote work challenges. These skills ensure you can translate complex technical solutions into customer value, close deals, and maintain strong client relationships from a distance.

How do remote sales engineers typically collaborate with product and technical teams to address client needs?

Remote Sales Engineers regularly coordinate with product managers and technical teams to ensure they fully understand the capabilities and limitations of the products they represent. This collaboration is essential when customizing solutions for clients or relaying customer feedback for product improvements. Most communication happens via virtual meetings, shared documentation, and project management tools, making clear and proactive communication skills especially important. By working closely with these teams, Sales Engineers help bridge the gap between customer requirements and technical feasibility.

Manager, Federal Sales Engineering

SpyCloud

Washington, DC โ€ข Remote

$167K - $250K/yr

Full-time

Re-posted 4 days ago

Job description

We are seeking an experienced Manager, Federal Sales Engineering to lead our public sectorย pre-sales effort in a true player-coach role. You will spend roughly half your time leading andย developing a small team of federal sales engineers, and the other half hands-on in strategicย engagements: running demos, scoping proofs of concept, and supporting discovery with civilianย agencies, the Department of Defense, the intelligence community, and federal law enforcement.

This is a senior role for a deeply technical cybersecurity leader who understands the federal market and the distinct missions, environments, and buying behavior of the DoD, the Intelligence Community, and federal law enforcement. You will work side by side with federal sales leadership and partners to turn SpyCloud's breach, malware, and identity data into mission outcomes.

This role is remote, but the person in this position must reside (or relocate to) the Washington D.C. Metro Area to visit Federal clients as needed.

What You'll Do:

  • Operate as a player-coach. Split your time evenly between managing the federal SE team and personally owning pre-sales efforts on strategic agency and partner accounts.
  • Lead and mentor a team of federal sales engineers, setting the standard for demos, proofs of concept, and technical discovery.
  • Partner with federal sales leadership to ensure coverage across civilian, defense, intelligence, and law enforcement accounts, tailored to each agency's mission and environment.
  • Turn data into mission outcomes. Use SpyCloud breach, infostealer/malware-derived, credential, and identity data to support investigations, fraud detection, account takeover defense, and adversary tracking for specific customer situations.
  • Drive channel and partner engagement with public sector resellers, system integrators, and solution architects through hands-on SME support.
  • Guide proofs of concept and pilots from scoping through outcome, and translate findings into clear, customer-ready results for technical and mission audiences.
  • Support engagements in secure environments (including SCIF settings) where required, leveraging your TS/SCI clearance.
  • Capture product gaps and field feedback, and bring them back to product and engineering to shape the federal roadmap.
  • Represent SpyCloud at federal and defense conferences, agency days, and industry events.

Requirements:

  • 8+ years of experience in cybersecurity pre-sales, including federal or public sector accounts.
  • Deep understanding of the federal market and the missions, operating environments, and acquisition behavior of the Department of Defense, federal law enforcement, and the Intelligence Community.
  • 4+ years of experience managing sales engineering teams.
  • Active Top Secret clearance and U.S. citizenship (required).
  • Based in the DC metro area.
  • Experience with OSINT tools and tradecraft.
  • Familiarity with federal procurement, contract vehicles, and the public sector buying cycle.
  • Experience tracking KPIs and creating health dashboards for team performance.
  • Willingness to travel as required across the region and to agency sites.
  • Python or similar coding knowledge.

Nice to Have:

  • Prior federal investigator, intelligence community, or DoD background.
  • Working knowledge of FedRAMP, DoD Impact Levels, and the ATO process.
  • Experience with public sector partner, system integrator, and reseller motions.
  • Familiarity with infostealer and malware-derived intelligence and identity analytics.
  • Hands-on experience with AI-assisted investigation tooling (agentic workflows, LLM-driven analysis, MCP or tool-calling integrations) and comfort demonstrating these to technical and mission audiences.

Base Salary Range: $133,000 - $200,000ย

On Target Earnings (OTE): $167,000 - $250,000

OTE is reflecting base salary plus variable commission at expected performance levels. Actual earnings will vary based on individual performance.

The salary range reflects the expected base compensation for a fully qualified candidate at this level based on experience, qualifications, and market data at the time of posting.
