Job Title: Technical Sales Engineer

Location: Richmond, Virginia; Manassas, Virginia

Starting Compensation Range: $89,000 - $115,000 per year

The Technical Sales Engineer is responsible for providing technical counsel to internal/external customers to develop proposals and negotiate contracts for new business opportunities. Additional responsibilities include developing new business opportunities that increase equipment, parts and service sales through direct face-to-face contact.

Requirements for the Technical Sales Engineer position include:

  • Estimate labor, material, construction, equipment costs and negotiate contracts for new orders
  • Work with customers to influence design specifications around Carter solutions for products and services
  • Work with internal and external customer base to develop project designs and specifications; testing and maintenance requirements; retrofit and innovative modifications for existing facilities for power systems applications
  • Coach, mentor and develop Product Support Reps, Inside Sales Reps, Estimators, Sales staff and Project Managers in providing estimates for products and services for power systems applications
  • Articulate technology and product positioning to both business and technical users
  • Develop standard documents to be used for quoting products and services for internal resources
  • Review vendor drawings and specific type of equipment and materials to be used in construction and equipment installation
  • Maintain an excellent level of product and service knowledge
  • Handle technical inquiries from internal and external customers
  • Consult with assigned and prospective customers regarding technical solutions to product maintenance, testing upgrades, troubleshooting, repairs and performance issues or deficiencies
  • Quote prices and credit terms and prepare sales contracts for orders obtained
  • Build and maintain customer relationships
  • Communicate and coordinate with Engineering, Advanced Electrical Services, PSD Teams and Parts Department to ensure timely and accurate execution by the service departments resulting in higher customer satisfaction
  • Investigate and resolve customer problems in a timely manner
  • Attend trade shows, customer care events, company sponsored sales and marketing events
  • Work in coordination with team to achieve Continuous Improvement goals and objectives
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Seeking Candidates with:

  • Minimum five years technical experience in the Electric Power Generation field, specifically the Generator/Switchgear and Transfer Switch/UPS business segments
  • Minimum of one year’s sales experience, preferred

Physical Requirements:

  • Regularly required to talk and/or hear
  • Frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus

Actual base pay may vary based on experience, skills, qualifications, education, geographic location, and other relevant business considerations. In addition to base pay, the compensation package may include participation in performance-based incentive programs (e.g., discretionary or non-discretionary plans), as well as overtime eligibility depending on the role.
