What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Protein Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Protein Engineer, you need a strong background in molecular biology, biochemistry, and protein design, typically with an advanced degree in a related field. Familiarity with computational modeling tools (such as Rosetta, PyMOL, or FoldX), bioinformatics platforms, and potentially certifications in relevant software are highly valued. Excellent problem-solving, self-motivation, and clear communication skills are crucial for remote collaboration and project management. These competencies ensure the effective design and optimization of proteins, drive innovation, and enable seamless teamwork across distributed environments.

What are some common challenges faced when working remotely in protein engineering, and how can they be addressed?

Remote protein engineering professionals often encounter challenges such as limited access to laboratory facilities, coordinating experiments across distributed teams, and maintaining effective collaboration with colleagues. To address these issues, many teams rely heavily on virtual lab simulations, robust data-sharing platforms, and frequent video meetings for project alignment. Clear communication, meticulous documentation, and leveraging cloud-based computational tools are essential for ensuring productivity and seamless integration with onsite teams.

What is remote protein engineering?

Remote protein engineering is the practice of designing, modifying, or analyzing proteins using computational tools and laboratory techniques, while working from a location outside of a traditional lab or office. Professionals in this field often use bioinformatics software, molecular modeling, and virtual collaboration platforms to conduct research and communicate with team members. This approach allows for flexibility and access to a broader talent pool, enabling scientists to contribute to projects from anywhere in the world. Remote protein engineering is commonly used in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and academic settings to accelerate the development of new drugs, enzymes, and therapeutic proteins.

What is the difference between Remote Protein Engineering vs Remote Biochemist?

AspectRemote Protein EngineeringRemote Biochemist
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or related fields; experience in protein designBachelor's or Master's in Biochemistry, Chemistry, or related fields; laboratory experience often preferred
Work EnvironmentPrimarily collaborative, project-based, often involving computational tools and lab workResearch-focused, combining lab experiments and data analysis, sometimes remotely
Industry UsageBiotech, pharmaceuticals, research institutionsAcademic, research institutions, biotech companies
Common Search & ComparisonRemote Protein Engineering vs Remote Biochemist

Remote Protein Engineering and Remote Biochemist roles share similar educational backgrounds and industry settings. However, protein engineering emphasizes designing and modifying proteins, often with computational tools, while biochemists focus on understanding biochemical processes, sometimes involving lab experiments. Both roles are vital in biotech and research sectors, with overlapping skills but distinct focuses.

Job description

At 1440 Foods, we're on a mission to energize people to unleash their full potential with a portfolio of great-tasting, high-protein snacks and supplements. Our brands Pure Protein, Body Fortress, MET-Rx, and FITCrunch make better nutrition accessible, enjoyable, and part of an active lifestyle.

As a fast-growing sports and active nutrition company, we are shaping the future of health and wellness in CPG. If you're looking to make a big impact in a high-growth, entrepreneurial environment, we'd love to have you on board!

Position Overview:

The Information Technology Manager is accountable for the end-to-end technical delivery of all IT systems and solutions at 1440 Foods, owning the full lifecycle from requirements through deployment, ongoing operations, and continuous improvement across infrastructure, ERP, cybersecurity, and enterprise integrations.

Reporting to the Director of Information Technology, this role combines deep technical execution with cross-functional coordination. The IT Manager ensures that all technology platforms are stable, performant, and aligned to business needs, working closely with internal teams, managed service providers, and technology vendors to drive quality outcomes.

This is a hands-on delivery role requiring both architectural breadth and operational depth, with accountability for system availability, solution quality, and IT service performance across the organization.

If you are a technically strong, delivery-oriented IT leader who thrives in a fast-paced environment and enjoys owning systems end-to-end, we'd love to talk to you.

Job Responsibilities:

IT Delivery & Program Execution:

  • Own the complete IT delivery lifecycle, requirements, design, development, testing (unit, SIT, regression), deployment, hypercare, and steady-state support, across all systems and platforms
  • Lead and coordinate cross-functional delivery teams, including internal IT staff and managed service providers; enforce quality gates, SLAs, and release standards
  • Maintain a prioritized, transparent project and change request backlog; ensure delivery status, risks, and blockers are communicated proactively to stakeholders
  • Drive continuous improvement in delivery processes, reducing rework, shortening cycle times, and improving first-time-right rates across all IT workstreams
  • Lead cross-functional initiatives spanning ERP (NetSuite), WMS, EDI, Planning (Atlas/John Galt), Power BI, and enterprise integrations

Infrastructure & Operations:

  • Oversee IT infrastructure across corporate, data center, and plant environments, ensuring availability, performance, capacity, and disaster recovery readiness
  • Maintain network architecture and OT/IT segmentation at manufacturing sites in alignment with Purdue Model best practices and security standards
  • Manage backup and business continuity plans across all critical systems; lead incident response for infrastructure-related outages and P1/P2 events
  • Drive proactive monitoring and alerting practices to minimize unplanned downtime

Cybersecurity:

  • Own the organization's cybersecurity posture end-to-end, managing tools across detection, prevention, and response functions
  • Lead vulnerability management programs, including scanning, remediation prioritization, and closure tracking across endpoints, networks, and applications
  • Ensure OT/IT security controls at manufacturing sites are maintained and regularly reviewed
  • Respond to and manage security incidents; conduct post-incident reviews and implement corrective actions

ERP, Business Applications & Integrations:

  • Serve as the primary technical owner for NetSuite ERP, governing configuration, customizations, integrations, role/permission management, and release quality
  • Manage the ERP change pipeline in partnership with external partners and internal stakeholders; track and prioritize change requests, defects, and enhancements
  • Oversee all enterprise integration points (EDI, SFTP, middleware) across supply chain, planning, and commercial partners
  • Lead requirements gathering and solution design with business users; produce functional specifications, test plans, and user acceptance documentation
  • Drive adoption of AI and automation capabilities across IT and business operations

Qualifications & Skills:
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field required; advanced degree preferred
  • 7+ years of progressive IT experience with demonstrated accountability for technology delivery, operations, and system quality
  • Background in consumer goods, food & beverage, or manufacturing environments strongly preferred
Technical Expertise:
  • Experience with ERP platforms (NetSuite preferred; SAP, Oracle, or Microsoft Dynamics considered)
  • Strong understanding of enterprise integration architecture (EDI, APIs, middleware platforms)
  • Cloud and infrastructure experience, including Azure, hybrid networking, and SaaS/PaaS environments
  • Working knowledge of DevOps and SDLC practices (CI/CD, version control, release management, testing frameworks)
  • Data and analytics literacy, including Power BI, data warehousing concepts, and SQL/SuiteQL
  • Cybersecurity fundamentals, including endpoint protection, vulnerability management, SIEM, and firewall administration
  • Familiarity with AI/automation platforms, including Microsoft Copilot and emerging LLM-based tools

Salary for the IT Manager role starts at $150,000.
