Job description

Distinguished Engineer - Agentic AI (Remote-Eligible)

As a Distinguished Engineer at Capital One, you will be a part of a community of technical experts working to define the future of banking in the cloud.

You will work alongside our talented team of developers, machine learning experts, product managers and people leaders. Our Distinguished Engineers are leading experts in their domains, helping devise practical and reusable solutions to complex problems. You will drive innovation at multiple levels, helping optimize business outcomes while driving towards strong technology solutions.

At Capital One, we believe diversity of thought strengthens our ability to influence, collaborate and provide the most innovative solutions across organizational boundaries. You will promote a culture of engineering excellence, and strike the right balance between lending expertise and providing an inclusive environment where the ideas of others can be heard and championed. You will lead the way in creating next-generation talent for Capital One Tech, mentoring internal talent and actively recruiting to keep building our community.

Distinguished Engineers are expected to lead through technical contribution. You will operate as a trusted advisor for our key technologies, platforms and capability domains, creating clear and concise communications, code samples, blog posts and other material to share knowledge both inside and outside the organization. You will specialize in a particular subject area, but your input and impact will be sought and expected throughout the organization.

About the Team
Business Cards & Payment's mission is to help businesses do more business - and the advent of Agentic AI offers massive new opportunities for BC&P to do so through real-time marketing and hyper personalized sales systems for business card customers.

We're hiring a Distinguished Engineer who is ready to carve BC&P's path towards an agentic future. Your mission will be to move BC&P beyond manual and reactive marketing and sales tools - helping us create our destination architecture for marketing platforms, build tools that help our sales teams be more effective, and help us lay the technical foundations of a real-time marketing strategy. You'll make direct contributions in this role: both defining our long term technical strategy and hands on prototyping, launch, and scaling of agentic systems.

Example areas you'll take on include:

  • Real-time, hyper personalized marketing systems that accurately & explainably prospect and engage new business customers.
  • Assistive technologies that arm our field agents with superhuman knowledge and context to grow deeper relationships and close more sales.
  • Exploration of autonomous sales agents (AISDRs) that self-improve via RLAIF.

As a Distinguished Engineer, you will be a technical expert defining the future of our architecture, collaborating across Capital One to drive innovation and deliver the systems that produce step function growth for our business.

You will lead through direct technical contribution: prototyping new features and systems, acting as a trusted advisor for key technologies, shaping our future architecture & evaluating what systems to build vs buy, and sharing knowledge internally and externally. Additionally, you will promote engineering excellence, foster an inclusive environment, and deeply mentor the next generation of technical talent.

If you are ready to work on some of the most cutting edge problems in our business, provide thought leadership, and have meaningful business impact, come join us in our mission to change banking for good!

Key responsibilities:

  • Rapidly prototype & assess new technologies that enable hyper personalized marketing and assistive field sales systems
  • Partner with (& influence) our enterprise and card tech organizations to help Capital One develop the best agentic marketing & sales systems on the planet
  • Establish and evangelize technical charters that will help the org more quickly adopt AI technologies
  • Bridge the gap between our current systems and the future, ensuring that existing systems remain healthy and continue to serve the business
  • Regularly clear roadblocks for developers across the org - with exceptional judgement for when to apply technical, process, or risk-acceptance solutions
  • Serve as an authoritative expert on non-functional system characteristics, such as performance, scalability and operability
  • Continue learning and injecting advanced technical knowledge into our community
  • Act as a role model and mentor within the tech community, helping to coach and strengthen the technical expertise and know-how of our engineering and product community
  • Provide architectural guidance and designs for large scale cross-domain programs
  • Working with engineering teams to design and execute PoCs and hands-on code contribution/reviews where necessary
Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • At least 7 years of experience in software engineering and solution architecture
  • At least 7 years of experience in enterprise architecture and design patterns
  • At least 3 years of experience with AWS
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree in Computer Science or a related field
  • 2+ years of experience working on applied and agentic AI systems
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to translate "Agentic AI" concepts into business value
  • 10+ years of experience in Cloud computing (AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud)
  • 10+ years of experience coding in at least one of the following: Java, Python, Go, JavaScript, TypeScript, Swift
  • 10+ years of professional experience in the full lifecycle of system development, from conception through architecture, implementation, testing, deployment and production support
