Remote Lobbying information

How does remote lobbying differ from traditional in-person lobbying, and what are some common challenges faced in this role?

Remote lobbying relies heavily on digital communication tools, such as video conferencing, emails, and collaborative platforms, rather than face-to-face meetings with legislators and stakeholders. One common challenge in this role is building and maintaining strong relationships without in-person interactions, which requires exceptional written and verbal communication skills. Remote lobbyists must also be proactive in staying informed about legislative developments and adept at coordinating virtual advocacy campaigns. Despite these challenges, remote lobbying offers flexibility and the opportunity to engage with a broader network of policymakers across different regions.

How to get hired as a remote lobbyist?

To get hired as a remote lobbyist, candidates should have a strong understanding of policy issues, excellent communication skills, and experience in government relations or advocacy. Building a network of contacts and demonstrating knowledge of relevant legislation can improve job prospects. Many roles also require familiarity with lobbying tools and compliance with legal regulations.

Are remote lobbying jobs hard to get?

Remote lobbying jobs can be competitive due to the specialized skills and experience required, such as understanding policy, government processes, and effective communication. Candidates with relevant backgrounds, networking, and knowledge of advocacy tools often have better chances of securing these roles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote lobbyist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Lobbyist, you need a deep understanding of legislative processes, policy analysis, and strong research abilities, often supported by a degree in political science, law, or public policy. Familiarity with digital advocacy platforms, CRM software, and virtual communication tools is crucial for managing campaigns and engaging stakeholders remotely. Outstanding written and verbal communication, relationship-building, and persuasive negotiation skills help set top candidates apart. These competencies are essential for effectively influencing policy decisions and building networks in a virtual environment.

What is remote lobbying?

Remote lobbying is the practice of advocating for policy changes or influencing legislation without being physically present at legislative offices or government buildings. Instead, lobbyists use digital tools such as email, video conferencing, and social media to communicate with lawmakers and stakeholders. This approach allows for greater flexibility, reduced travel costs, and the ability to reach decision-makers regardless of location. Remote lobbying has grown significantly, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic, making it a standard part of advocacy strategies.

Is remote lobbying a high paying job?

Remote lobbying can be a well-paying career, especially for experienced professionals with strong communication skills and knowledge of policy issues. Salaries vary based on experience, location, and the organization, with some roles offering six-figure incomes. However, entry-level positions may have lower pay compared to senior or specialized roles.

Job description

Regional Lead - Government & Industry Affairs

VGW is an interactive entertainment company, harnessing technology and creativity to deliver world-class, free-to-play online social games.

We have an exciting opportunity to join our Government & Industry Affairs team in the United States and are currently looking for 2 x Regional Leads to join the team.

Reporting into the VP of Government Relations, this role translates VGW's lobbying strategy into targeted, state-specific lobbying campaigns managing a roster of external contract lobbyists, developing relationships with state government officials, and delivering actionable field intelligence back to central leadership.

This role is suited to a seasoned state-level government affairs professional who is comfortable managing external partners, navigating diverse state political environments and operating with a high degree of autonomy within a clearly defined strategy.

We're open to candidates based anywhere in the US, and this role can be performed remotely.

The salary range for this role is USD $160,000 - $210,000 per year.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Serve as the primary accountability manager for all external lobbyists within the assigned regional portfolio: set performance expectations, respond to their queries in a timely manner, review deliverables, conduct weekly check-ins, and provide written performance assessments.
  • Translate the company's corporate policy positions and lobbying strategy into state-specific advocacy messaging - tailoring arguments, framing, and messenger selection to local political dynamics.
  • Develop and maintain productive, credible relationships with state legislators, committee staff, state attorneys general offices, and state gaming and consumer protection regulators.
  • Participate in cross-regional strategy sessions to ensure consistency of messaging, share field intelligence, and coordinate on multi-state legislative campaigns.
  • Represent the company at hearings, fundraisers, conferences, and stakeholder engagements within the portfolio.
  • Monitor and track all active and emerging legislation across assigned states that affects social gaming, sweepstakes operations, consumer protection, age verification, advertising and related policy areas.

What you will bring to the role:

  • 7-12+ years of experience in state government, state-level lobbying, legislative affairs, or political campaigns, with direct exposure to multiple state legislatures or regulatory agencies in B2C organisations.
  • Demonstrated experience managing external vendors, consultants or contract lobbyists against defined deliverables and performance standards.
  • Working knowledge of gaming regulation, sweepstakes law, consumer protection, or adjacent policy areas - or a credible track record of rapidly building substantive expertise in new regulatory sectors.
  • Strong political credibility and established relationships with key government officials in the assigned regional portfolio.
  • Experience in a multi-state lobbying role in organisations in fast-moving industries such as technology, fintech, RMG and/or gaming.
  • Proficiency with legislative tracking tools.
