What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Legal Researcher, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Legal Researcher, you need strong analytical skills, in-depth legal knowledge, and typically a law degree or paralegal certification. Familiarity with legal research databases like Westlaw or LexisNexis, and proficiency in document management software, are essential technical competencies. Excellent written communication, attention to detail, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for effective remote work. These abilities ensure accurate, timely legal analysis and support for clients or legal teams in a virtual environment.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in remote legal research roles, and how can they be addressed?

Remote legal research professionals often face challenges such as limited direct access to colleagues for immediate feedback, managing time zones when working with distributed teams, and ensuring secure access to sensitive legal databases. To address these, it's important to establish clear communication channels, use collaborative tools for sharing research, and stay updated on data security protocols. Regular check-ins with supervisors and participating in virtual legal research forums can also help maintain high-quality work and professional growth.

What Is a Remote Legal Research Job?

Remote legal research jobs allow you to work from home to research statues, legislations, and existing case law. In your role as a legal researcher, you may collect information, leverage public resources to find things that may impact a case, identify applicable laws and rules, and summarize your findings for a law firm or legal department. Remote legal researchers also speak with clients, update relevant parties on their findings, respond to discovery requests, coordinate with head lawyers, and apply the principles of logical deduction to information to uncover the truth. Many remote legal research jobs focus on specific types of cases, as they all require a different approach. Remote legal researchers rarely appear in court.

What is remote legal research?

Professionals in this role use online legal databases, digital libraries, and other tools to research statutes, case law, regulations, and legal precedents. Remote legal researchers often support attorneys, law firms, or corporate legal departments by providing written reports, summaries, or legal memos. The remote aspect allows for flexible working arrangements and often requires strong digital literacy and self-motivation.

Job description

About us
Jefferson Capital Systems, LLC is a leading purchaser and servicer of consumer charged-off receivables in North America and the United Kingdom. With a strong reputation for compliance, innovation, and operational excellence, we pride ourselves on treating consumers with respect and dignity. Our legal team plays a critical role in ensuring our continued success in the dynamic and highly regulated consumer finance industry.
Job Summary
We are currently seeking an Utah-licensed Attorney to join our dynamic, multi-state legal team. This is a remote position based in Utah with occasional court or remote virtual appearances across various Utah counties as needed. The ideal candidate will have 0-3 years of courtroom experience and motion practice, and thrive in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
This is not your traditional law firm setting. You'll be part of a collaborative legal process involving legal assistants, support teams, and multiple stakeholders, all working together to ensure responsible litigation and regulatory compliance in consumer collections.
What does a typical day look like?
  • Manage a high-volume docket of consumer collection matters throughout Utah
  • Handle all aspects of litigation: from initial filings through post-judgment enforcement
  • Conduct motion practice, hearings, and trials both virtually and in-person
  • Negotiate settlements and communicate with pro se defendants and opposing counsel
  • Collaborate with remote legal support staff to ensure timely and accurate filings
  • Maintain strict compliance with state and federal consumer protection laws (FDCPA, CFPB)
  • Conduct legal research and work on special projects as needed

What qualifications are required for this position?
  • Must be licensed and in good standing with the State Bar of Utah
  • 0-3 years of relevant legal experience, preferably in litigation or collections
  • Comfortable working independently in a remote environment
  • Strong negotiation skills and excellent verbal and written communication
  • Detail-oriented with exceptional organizational and time management skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and legal document management systems
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt quickly, problem-solve, and work as a team player
  • Familiarity with consumer collections and regulatory compliance is a plus
  • Occasional court or virtual appearances across various Utah counties as needed.
  • Physical presence in the state is not required as fully remote position with a flexible schedule.
  • Suitable for entry-level associate.
