The Remote Laboratory Manager primarily oversees lab operations remotely, focusing on management, coordination, and project oversight. In contrast, Laboratory Technicians are involved in hands-on testing and data collection within the lab. While both roles require scientific credentials, the manager's role is more administrative and supervisory, often working remotely, whereas technicians are on-site executing laboratory procedures.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Laboratory Manager, and why are they important?

To excel as a Remote Laboratory Manager, you need a solid background in laboratory sciences, strong organizational skills, and a relevant degree such as a BS or MS in a scientific field. Familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMS), remote communication platforms, and quality assurance protocols is typically required. Exceptional leadership, problem-solving, and effective virtual communication skills are vital for managing teams and maintaining high standards from a distance. These competencies ensure efficient lab operations, regulatory compliance, and successful coordination in a remote or hybrid environment.

What are Remote Laboratory Managers?

Remote Laboratory Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing the operations of laboratories from a remote location. They coordinate daily lab activities, manage staff, ensure safety and compliance with regulations, and maintain equipment and inventory using digital tools. By leveraging technology, they monitor data, workflows, and performance without being physically present in the lab. This role is becoming more common as organizations adopt flexible work environments and digital lab management systems.

How does a Remote Laboratory Manager effectively oversee lab operations and ensure quality control when not physically present on site?

A Remote Laboratory Manager typically leverages digital lab management systems, video conferencing, and real-time data monitoring tools to oversee daily operations and maintain quality standards. They coordinate closely with on-site technicians and scientists through regular virtual meetings, digital protocols, and detailed reporting. Building strong communication channels and trust with team members is essential to promptly address issues and ensure compliance with safety and regulatory guidelines. While not physically present, remote managers often conduct virtual audits, review digital lab records, and provide ongoing training to ensure the lab runs smoothly and efficiently.

Job description

What You Will Do
The ISR-7 Space Systems Assurance and Implementation group seeks a highly team-focused, strategically organized, and cross-functionally collaborative professional to support Los Alamos National Laboratory's Global Security (GS) missions. The diverse portfolios encompassed within GS programs feature advanced space flight payloads, innovative enabling technologies, and associated modeling and simulation capabilities. ISR-7 is one of several groups integral to product realization, where multi-disciplinary project teams with resources from multiple divisions, develop integrated space and remote-sensing systems from inception, design, and prototyping; through fabrication, assembly, test, and integration; to commissioning and operation.
The selected candidate will exert significant latitude in technical project management roles for multiple projects through close partnership with the program and project leadership and other stakeholders from internal and external organizations, many of whom have complex and competing requirements. Because of the diversity within GS programs, this role will interface with organizations and personnel at many levels of the Laboratory and technical disciplines. To be successful, exceptional tact, strategic diplomacy, and independent judgment in providing scope, requirements, communication, technical risk, and project management are essential. The ideal candidate will distinguish themselves through enthusiasm, intellectual curiosity and awareness, and a demonstrated commitment to creating and stewarding effective, high-performing teams.

  • Coordinating, participating in, and controlling comprehensive project documentation: regular and final reports, presentations, and other reporting mechanisms
  • Serving as a driving manager for arranging and executing project meetings, design reviews, readiness reviews, and post-project assessments
  • Assessing, communicating, and mitigating complex risks and obstacles of assigned projects in partnership with project leadership

  • Advanced proficiency with business and operations systems and standard software applications (e.g., Microsoft, Oracle, Adobe)
  • Knowledge of engineering or scientific principles in laboratory, experimental, and R&D environments
  • Demonstrated experience managing the planning and execution including cost, schedule, scope, financial, risk, and resource management, and commensurate change control of science or engineering projects
  • Demonstrated advanced written, verbal, and presentation skills for communicating complex project requirements across technical teams and organizations at all levels
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and sustain strategic working relationships
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally up to twice per month, and to obtain a DOE Q clearance (and other required federal clearances)

  • Demonstrated knowledge of multiple engineering or scientific principles in laboratory, experimental, or R&D environments
