Must reside in Columbus, OH. Will initially work remotely with occasional visits to the Cincinnati, OH office.

This role oversees the full HVAC scope on multiple projects, ensures compliance with mechanical codes and standards, and exercises professional judgment over all aspects of HVAC system design, documentation, and constructability. The position combines hands-on engineering with leadership responsibilities, offering real professional authority, influence over standards and processes, and the opportunity to shape the mechanical engineering function over the long term.

Responsibilities

  • Exercise direct supervision, professional judgment, and decision-making authority over all HVAC design aspects from concept through construction documentation.
  • Review, approve, and seal HVAC construction documents prepared using AutoCAD and Revit, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and code compliance.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, and best practices, including the International Mechanical Code (IMC), ASHRAE standards, local Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) requirements, and relevant energy and sustainability codes.
  • Provide technical direction on HVAC system selection, sizing, layout, controls, and constructability to support efficient, reliable, and maintainable designs.
  • Oversee the HVAC scope across multiple concurrent projects, maintaining quality, consistency, and adherence to established schedules and milestones.
  • Set clear technical requirements, project milestones, and deliverables for mechanical engineering teams and ensure they are met.
  • Participate in project kickoff meetings, internal design reviews, and coordination meetings with architects, owners, and consultants to align expectations and resolve issues.
  • Resolve complex HVAC design challenges and provide final technical determinations when design decisions require sr-level judgment.
  • Meet regularly with engineers and designers producing HVAC work to provide guidance, feedback, and coaching on technical and professional matters.
  • Mentor junior and mid-level engineers in HVAC design fundamentals, advanced technical concepts, professional judgment, and licensure development.
  • Hire mechanical engineering staff and coordinate onboarding, training, and ongoing professional development activities within the department.
  • Promote accountability, technical rigor, and continuous improvement within the mechanical engineering team.
  • Assist leadership in defining and executing HVAC design strategies that align with broader company objectives and market positioning.
  • Prepare and manage the mechanical engineering department’s budget, staffing plans, and resource requirements to support current and future project workloads.
  • Contribute to long-term planning for future development, capacity growth, and expanded service offerings in mechanical engineering.
  • Implement innovative tools, workflows, and technologies to improve engineering efficiency, quality, and consistency of deliverables.
  • Review, develop, and update internal policies, procedures, and standards related to mechanical engineering processes and HVAC design practices.
  • Build and strengthen relationships with HVAC equipment manufacturers and sales representatives to stay informed about products and technologies.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with local installing contractors and trade partners to support successful project execution and constructability.
  • Serve as a technical ambassador for the firm by supporting proposal efforts, interviews, and client discussions as needed.
  • Support and enhance the company’s reputation for quality, professionalism, and engineering excellence in the marketplace.

Essential Skills

  • Professional engineering license in mechanical engineering or a closely related discipline, or actively working toward obtaining a PE license.
  • Minimum of 3 years of HVAC engineering experience, including design and documentation of building mechanical systems.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in AutoCAD and/or Revit for preparing and reviewing HVAC construction documents.
  • Strong project management experience, including planning, scheduling, and coordinating HVAC engineering work across multiple projects.
  • Deep understanding of HVAC system design principles, including system selection, sizing, layout, controls, and constructability considerations.
  • Thorough knowledge of the International Mechanical Code (IMC), ASHRAE standards, local AHJ requirements, and applicable energy and sustainability codes.
  • Mechanical engineering expertise with the ability to exercise sound professional judgment and serve as Engineer of Record.
  • Organizational and leadership skills to manage departmental budgets, staffing plans, and team development initiatives.
  • Ability to provide direct supervision and technical oversight to engineers and designers producing HVAC work.
  • Strong communication skills for interacting with architects, owners, consultants, contractors, and internal stakeholders.
