Job description

CFO for a Portfolio of Growing Law Firms (Full-Time, Remote)

Turn Financial Data Into Confident Business Decisions

Location: Remote (Must reside in AZ, CO, FL, GA, IL, MD, MI, NC, NJ, NY, PA, TX, or WA)

Employment Type: Full-Time (4550 hours/week) | W-2 Employee

Compensation: $110,000 Base Salary + Performance Incentives (Target OTE: $182,000)

About the Role

This is a full-time, salaried CFO position not a 1099 consulting or independent fractional-practice opportunity.

As part of the HTM team, you'll provide CFO-level services to a dedicated portfolio of up to 30 small law firms. We handle all sales, marketing, and client acquisition, allowing you to focus entirely on financial leadership, strategic guidance, and building trusted client relationships.

If you've worked in a fractional, outsourced CFO, or multi-client advisory environment, you'll feel right at home. This role requires the ability to quickly shift between multiple businesses while delivering the same level of strategic insight and financial leadership each client expects from a trusted CFO.

No legal industry experience is required we'll teach you everything you need to know about serving law firms.

About HTM

How To MANAGE a Small Law Firm (HTM) is the nation's leading fractional C-suite provider for solo and small law firms.

We've been recognized as an Inc. 5000 Fastest-Growing Company every year since 2013 and continue to grow rapidly. Our culture is built on ownership, accountability, flexibility, and results not bureaucracy. We believe great people do their best work when they're trusted, supported, and empowered.

What You'll Do

You'll become the trusted financial advisor for a portfolio of small businesses, helping owners understand their numbers, improve profitability, and make confident business decisions.

Responsibilities
  • Serve as CFO for a portfolio of up to 30 clients
  • Analyze financial statements, KPIs, cash flow, profitability, and business performance
  • Identify financial trends, operational risks, and growth opportunities
  • Deliver monthly financial reviews and strategic recommendations
  • Help business owners understand financial data and turn insights into action
  • Partner with bookkeepers to improve financial accuracy and reporting
  • Develop budgets, forecasts, and cash flow projections
  • Hold clients accountable to financial goals and performance metrics
  • Build trusted long-term client relationships
  • Collaborate with internal team members to deliver an exceptional client experience
Required Qualifications
  • Direct experience managing 5+ concurrent client or business-unit relationships in an advisory, fractional, or multi-entity capacity this is a hard requirement, not a preference. Candidates whose experience is limited to a single company's in-house finance function will not be considered.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related business field
  • Strong accounting and financial management background
  • Ability to translate complex financial information into practical business advice
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
  • High emotional intelligence and executive presence
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
The Ideal Candidate
  • 10+ years of progressive accounting and financial leadership experience
  • Experience supporting businesses with annual revenues ranging from approximately $500K to $30M+
  • Strong background in forecasting, budgeting, cash flow management, financial reporting, and FP&A
  • CPA or CMA designation is a plus, but not required
  • Comfortable delivering difficult financial conversations with confidence, empathy, and professionalism
  • Believes financial leadership is about helping business owners make better decisions not simply reporting the numbers
  • Thrives in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment where every day brings a new challenge
This Role Is Not a Fit If You
  • You're looking for a part-time, consulting, or contract opportunity
  • You prefer supporting one company instead of managing multiple client relationships
  • You want to continue building your own fractional CFO practice
  • You prefer delegating financial analysis instead of performing it yourself
  • You thrive only in highly structured corporate environments
Compensation & Benefits
  • $110,000 base salary
  • Performance incentives with target earnings of $182,000 annually
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance (75% employer-paid)
  • Company-paid short- and long-term disability insurance
  • 401(k) with company match (up to 3.5%)
  • Unlimited PTO
  • Company-wide paid shutdown during Thanksgiving week
  • One additional mandatory paid week off annually
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
  • Pet insurance
  • Legal benefits
  • Professional and leadership development programs
  • Fully remote work environment with flexible scheduling
