What is a remote engineering recruiter?

A Remote Engineering Recruiter is a professional who specializes in sourcing, interviewing, and hiring engineering talent for an organization while working remotely. They use various online tools and platforms to connect with candidates, assess their technical skills, and coordinate the hiring process without being physically present in an office. These recruiters often work for tech companies, staffing agencies, or as independent consultants, focusing on roles such as software engineers, DevOps specialists, and other technical positions. Their work is crucial for organizations seeking to build strong engineering teams, especially in a remote or distributed work environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote engineering recruiter?

To thrive as a Remote Engineering Recruiter, you need a solid understanding of technical roles, recruitment processes, and sourcing strategies, often backed by a degree in HR or related field. Familiarity with applicant tracking systems (ATS), LinkedIn Recruiter, and sourcing platforms is essential, and certifications like AIRS or SHRM can be advantageous. Excellent communication, relationship-building, and time management skills help recruiters stand out, especially when working with distributed teams and candidates. These competencies ensure effective talent acquisition, foster strong candidate experiences, and enable successful placements in a competitive, remote-first market.

What are some common challenges faced by remote engineering recruiters, and how can they be addressed?

Remote Engineering Recruiters often face challenges such as building strong relationships with candidates and hiring managers virtually, navigating time zone differences, and assessing technical skills effectively without in-person interaction. To address these, recruiters can leverage video calls for more personal engagement, use structured interview processes and technical assessments, and maintain clear, consistent communication. Utilizing collaborative tools and frequent check-ins with the hiring team also helps ensure smooth coordination and alignment during the recruitment process.

Job description

Senior Technical Recruiter, Engineering & Architecture (Remote)
At Salas O'Brien we tell our clients that we're engineered for impact. This passion for making a difference applies just as much to our team as it does to our projects. That's why we're committed to living our values every day: inspiring, achieving, and connecting as shared owners of our success with a focus on a sustainable future.
Building for the long-term means that all of our team members can expect to work on amazing projects with a people-first approach to problem solving. It also means that each member of our team has truly limitless potential to build a unique, meaningful, and high-impact career-and they'll receive great total rewards along the way.
About Us
Founded in 1975, Salas O'Brien is an employee-owned engineering and professional services firm focused on achieving impact for our clients, our team, and the world. We know that tomorrow's requirements are today's opportunities, and we are here to design lasting solutions for pressing challenges.
We work across a variety of industries providing integrated engineering and consulting services. Our specialized experience includes design for data centers, healthcare, science and technology, high-rise buildings, clean energy, education, and other building types as well as structural and building sciences, infrastructure asset management, advanced robotics, and more.
Our technical expertise is paired with an exceptional team of business development, human resources, finance and accounting, information technology, and marketing professionals, all of whom play a key role in bringing our commitments to life every day.
The Opportunity
Salas O'Brien is a supermajority employee-owned engineering and technical consulting firm operating from locations across North America, ranked No. 31 on Engineering News-Record's 2026 Top 500 Design Firms list. We are seeking a Senior Technical Recruiter to support hiring across our engineering and architecture practices. This is a remote position reporting to the Director, Technical Recruiting.
In this role, you will recruit the engineers, architects, and technical professionals who design data centers, healthcare facilities, laboratories, and the infrastructure that supports them. These are specialized disciplines with limited candidate pools, and most qualified professionals are currently employed and not actively seeking new opportunities. Success in this role depends on proactive sourcing, credible outreach, and sustained relationship building.
The firm continues to grow through both organic expansion and mergers, which means hiring demand is continuous and the disciplines you support will evolve. You will manage searches across architecture, engineering, construction, and professional services, partnering with hiring managers across multiple business units and offices. You will also develop substantive knowledge of the disciplines you support, including credentials, project types, and the factors that determine candidate fit.
What You'll Recruit For
You will recruit across a broad range of engineering, architecture, technology, and design disciplines. The specific disciplines and markets you support will vary with business needs and may shift over time.
What You'll Do
  • Partner with the Recruiting HR Account Leader to support team needs.
  • Support the full recruiting lifecycle, including sourcing, screening, interview coordination, candidate management, offer support, closing, and acceptance.
  • Build and prioritize talent pipelines in advance of hiring demand, with emphasis on hard-to-fill disciplines and geographies.
  • Develop sourcing strategies that extend beyond LinkedIn, including Boolean search, referrals, professional associations, competitor research, and geographic talent mapping.
  • Identify and engage passive technical professionals through personalized, credible outreach, and maintain those relationships to support current and future hiring needs.
  • Conduct thorough candidate screens assessing discipline and project experience, professional credentials, client exposure, leadership capability, career motivations, and compensation expectations.
  • Present qualified, diverse candidate slates with clear recommendations and supporting market context.
  • Deliver a responsive, professional candidate experience and partner closely with Talent Acquisition, HR, compensation, and business leadership to maintain search momentum.
  • Use recruiting data, including response rates, conversion, and pipeline health, to evaluate sourcing effectiveness and adjust your approach. Maintain accurate and timely records in the applicant tracking system.
What We're Looking For
  • Five or more years of recruiting experience within AEC, engineering consulting, construction, infrastructure, manufacturing, or another technical industry.
  • Demonstrated success sourcing and hiring passive, hard-to-find technical professionals across multiple disciplines, using LinkedIn Recruiter, Boolean search, referrals, professional associations, and talent-market mapping.
  • Ability to quickly understand technical roles and translate business requirements into focused search strategies.
  • Experience building proactive talent pipelines, together with strong candidate assessment, relationship management, and offer-closing skills.
  • Working knowledge of technical credentials such as PE, EIT, RA, LEED, CxA, and other discipline-specific certifications, or the ability to learn them quickly.
  • Fluency with an ATS, LinkedIn Recruiter, and sourcing or talent-intelligence tools.
  • Ability to manage multiple competing priorities with strong organization and consistent follow-through.
  • Sound judgment and the confidence to constructively challenge assumptions or recommend an alternative approach when market conditions warrant.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a remote environment and maintain close working relationships with hiring managers across multiple time zones.
You'll Be Successful Here If You
  • You are genuinely interested in engineering and building systems, and you develop technical credibility with the professionals you recruit.
  • You take ownership of difficult searches and adjust your approach based on data and market feedback.
  • You work effectively across a decentralized organization with multiple offices, disciplines, and leadership styles.
  • You are open, direct, and respectful in how you communicate, and you take accountability for your commitments.
Why Salas O'Brien
  • Meaningful impact: Our work advances the human experience through the built environment, from ensuring hospitals have reliable power to improving pharmaceutical production quality and conserving resources. You will recruit the professionals who deliver it.
  • Ownership and visibility: Your work is visible to leadership and directly supports the growth of the business.

  • Growth with stability: Join an established, supermajority employee-owned firm that continues to invest in its people and future.
  • Competitive rewards: Competitive compensation, a 401(k) match provided in company shares, and comprehensive benefits.
