Business Systems Analyst - remote

Upland Capital Group, Inc. is an AM Best rated "A-" VIII specialty property/casualty insurer headquartered in Dallas, Texas. Through its wholly owned insurance carrier, Upland Specialty Insurance Company, the company markets, underwrites and services specialty insurance products in select markets to include excess transportation, construction casualty, excess casualty, primary general liability, excess public entity, professional liability errors and omissions as well as excess cyber liability.

We focus on "old school" underwriting as a craft, add "new school" analytics and technology, and encourage a gritty, growth mindset among people called "we entrepreneurs."

As an Excess and Surplus (E&S) carrier, we face unique and interesting challenges every day. We are seeking a Business Systems Analyst with a strong focus on technology to join our amazing team.

Primary Function:

The Business Systems Analyst plays a critical role in bridging business needs and technical solutions. This role involves close collaboration with stakeholders across departments to understand processes, uncover needs, and translate them into clear, actionable requirements. The BSA supports the full project lifecycle by facilitating discussions, analyzing impacts, identifying improvement opportunities, and ensuring that solutions align with business goals.  This role also requires a working technical understanding of core business systems to support solutions in production, with collaboration and support from data and development teams.

 Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Requirements Gathering: Elicit, document, and analyze business requirements from stakeholders through interviews, workshops, and research to ensure a comprehensive understanding of organizational goals.
  • Business Process Analysis: Evaluate existing business processes and workflows, identifying areas for improvement, and proposing optimized solutions to enhance efficiency and productivity.
  • Requirements Documentation: Prepare clear and concise documentation of business requirements, process flows, use cases, and user stories to facilitate effective communication between technical and non-technical team members.
  • Solution Design: Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and recommend innovative solutions aligned with business needs, while considering technical feasibility and cost-effectiveness.
  • Testing Support and Validation: Collaborate with QA teams to clarify expected outcomes and support comprehensive testing coverage.
  • Production Issue Support: Collaborate with technical and support teams to analyze and clarify production issues, assist with root cause identification, and ensure business impacts are communicated and understood for timely resolution.
  • Incident Documentation Support: Contribute to documenting production incidents by capturing relevant business context, clarifying resolutions steps, and supporting efforts to identify and implement preventative measures with support and collaboration from technical teams.
  • Light Technical Analysis - Write simple SQL queries and run SQL queries provided by technical teams to investigate data discrepancies, validate system behavior, and support debugging efforts.  Read and interpret technical documentation, such as API specifications and system configuration guides to better understand and support platforms.
  • User Enablement & Change Management Support: Assist in preparing training materials, answering user questions, and clarifying system functionality to support successful adoption of production processes, systems, and tools.  Assist in preparing stakeholders for system or process changes by contributing to communications, documentation, and impact assessment.
  • Agile Collaboration: Participate in backlog refinement, sprint planning, and daily stand ups to ensure user stories are well-defined, prioritized and understood by the team.  Work collaboratively with technical and business teams to achieve organizational goals.
  • Other duties as assigned

 Experience, Education, Special Skills Required:

  • Bachelor's degree and 2+ years of related experience, or 5+ years of experience as a Business Systems Analyst in lieu of degree
  • Proven experience as a Business Analyst or in a similar role
  • Strong working knowledge of SQL required, including ability to write queries to investigate data issues and support debugging alongside technical teams
  • Comfortable navigating admin/configuration settings to troubleshoot issues
  • Self-motivated learner who enjoys tackling unfamiliar problems, with ability to research and interpret technical documentation independently
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to contribute, support, and stay organized in a fast-paced, collaborative team environment
  • Extremely organized with great attention to detail
  • Ability to negotiate and settle differences quickly and peacefully
  • Extremely proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Familiarity with integration patterns (e.g., REST APIs, batch file transfers) preferred
