What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Digital Manufacturing Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Digital Manufacturing Specialist, you need expertise in manufacturing processes, CAD/CAM software, and a background in engineering or related technical fields. Familiarity with digital manufacturing tools such as 3D modeling software, cloud-based collaboration platforms, and certifications like Six Sigma or Lean Manufacturing are highly valuable. Strong problem-solving, communication, and self-management skills are essential for coordinating projects and troubleshooting remotely. These competencies enable efficient, high-quality production and seamless collaboration in distributed manufacturing environments.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in remote digital manufacturing roles?

Professionals in remote digital manufacturing often face challenges related to coordinating work across different time zones and ensuring seamless communication with on-site teams. Managing real-time data from distributed manufacturing equipment and maintaining cybersecurity for sensitive production information are also critical concerns. Additionally, adapting to new digital tools and staying updated with rapidly evolving technologies requires continuous learning and flexibility. Successful remote digital manufacturing professionals typically develop strong collaboration skills and proactively address potential workflow disruptions to keep projects on track.

What is remote digital manufacturing?

Remote digital manufacturing refers to the use of digital technologies, such as cloud computing, IoT, and advanced software, to manage and oversee manufacturing processes from a distance. This approach allows engineers, designers, and operators to monitor equipment, control production lines, and analyze data without being physically present in the factory. The goal is to increase efficiency, flexibility, and scalability in manufacturing by leveraging digital tools and connectivity. Remote digital manufacturing is particularly valuable for companies with global operations or those seeking to reduce on-site staffing requirements.

What is the difference between Remote Digital Manufacturing vs Remote CNC Machinist?

Job Title: Senior SAP BASIS & Infrastructure Engineer (Digital Manufacturing)
Location: Remote / Global Travel Required (Focus on US & Mexico rollout)
Experience Level: 10-15+ Yeara
Job Summary
We are seeking a Senior SAP BASIS Engineer to spearhead the platform administration, landscape governance, and technical upgrades supporting our global digital manufacturing platform (SAP MII/ME). In this role, you will be the foundational expert responsible for system performance, security, and connectivity between our legacy SAP ECC environments, migrating S/4HANA instances, and SAP BTP cloud extensions. Working with a premier Aerospace & Defense client, you will ensure maximum system availability and robust, real-time data flows to shop floors in the US and Mexico while maintaining ironclad federal compliance.
Core Responsibilities
  • Landscape Governance & Upgrades: Administer, upgrade, and maintain the existing global SAP MII, SAP ME (NetWeaver Java stacks), and core ERP (ECC and S/4HANA) infrastructure.
  • S/4HANA Migration & BTP Connectivity:
Lead the BASIS-side execution of migrating from ECC to S/4HANA, including the setup, configuration, and security routing of SAP BTP Cloud Connectors.
  • Interface & Connectivity Management: Configure and maintain high-volume, real-time middleware connectivity (RFC destinations, ALE/IDoc ports, OData gateway configurations) linking the ERP core to the shop-floor MII/ME layers (excluding SCADA).
  • System Performance & Tuning: Monitor and optimize memory management, database performance (SAP HANA and SQL Server), work processes, and JVM settings to eliminate latency in manufacturing data transfers.
  • A&D Compliance & Infrastructure Security: Implement strict security hardening, encryption protocols, and user authorization controls across all layers to comply with A&D standards (ITAR, EAR, NIST, and data residency laws between the US and Mexico).
  • Technical Collaboration: Partner closely with the Principal MII/ME Architect and Senior ABAP Developer to deploy custom transport requests, provision cloud environments, and troubleshoot infrastructure bottlenecks.

Technical Qualifications
  • BASIS & NetWeaver Expertise: 10-15+ years of core SAP BASIS administration experience, with specific expertise managing both ABAP and NetWeaver Java stacks (required for SAP MII/ME).
  • HANA & Migration Experience: Proven track record supporting at least one major ECC-to-S/4HANA migration project, alongside expert-level SAP HANA database administration skills.
  • SAP BTP Cloud Administration: Hands-on experience setting up and administering SAP BTP environments, managing subaccounts, and configuring secure Cloud Connectors for hybrid landscapes.
  • Manufacturing Infrastructure Experience: Prior experience supporting highly critical, 24/7 manufacturing landscapes where system downtime immediately impacts plant-floor operations.
  • Transport & Change Management: Deep knowledge of STMS (SAP Transport Management System), ChaRM, and deploying transport configurations across complex, multi-tiered global development tracks.

Soft Skills & Compliance
  • Exceptional troubleshooting and root-cause analysis skills under high-pressure, zero-downtime manufacturing conditions.
  • Strong communication skills to manage technical updates across global teams in the US and Mexico.
  • Due to ITAR regulations and defense contract restrictions, US Citizenship and/or GC restrictions apply and some security clearances may be required.
  • Aerospace and Defense(A & D) prior experience strongly preferred and SAP Certification are always a plus
