What is a remote developer?

Remote developers are software professionals who work from locations outside of a traditional office environment, often from home or co-working spaces. They use digital tools to collaborate with team members and clients, writing code, fixing bugs, and participating in project meetings online. Remote developers enjoy flexibility in their work location and hours, but they also need strong communication skills and self-motivation. This role is popular in the tech industry, enabling companies to access talent from around the world.

What does a remote developer do?

Remote developers, or remote software developers, design and create computer software programs and applications for their employer or client. Unlike in-house developers, remote developers work from home or another location outside of the office. As a remote developer, you discuss the kind of program you need to create, making sure to clarify with your department or with your client what they need in their application. You may develop an entirely new program or improve an existing one. Remote developers are responsible for a program’s overall function, and they design precise workflow charts that explain to programmers what code is needed for different aspects of the program. Remote developers may also design tests and protocols for the QA department to follow when they are testing the application.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Developer, you need strong programming skills, problem-solving abilities, and experience with software development methodologies, often supported by a relevant degree or coding certifications. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, remote collaboration tools (e.g., Slack, Jira), and cloud-based development environments is typically required. Excellent self-motivation, time management, and clear written communication set standout remote developers apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering high-quality code, collaborating effectively across distributed teams, and maintaining productivity independently.

What are some common challenges faced by remote developers, and how can they be managed effectively?

Remote developers often encounter challenges such as communication barriers, feelings of isolation, and managing work-life balance due to the lack of physical boundaries between home and work. To overcome these, it's important to establish clear communication channels with your team, set regular check-ins, and use collaboration tools effectively. Additionally, creating a dedicated workspace and setting defined work hours can help maintain productivity and personal well-being. Many companies also support remote developers through virtual team-building activities and flexible schedules.

Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced SAP Integration Developer with expertise in SAP Integration Suite / CPI (Cloud Platform Integration) to join our SAP project team. This role is responsible for designing, developing, implementing, and governing end-to-end integration solutions across SAP and non-SAP systems in a hybrid environment. The position combines hands-on delivery with technical leadership-driving solution discussions, establishing integration standards, and ensuring high-quality integration design and implementation across a global SAP program.
The ideal candidate will bring a strong technical depth in SAP Integration Suite (CPI, API Mgmt, Cloud Connector and related tools), experience in leading complex integration projects, and the ability to mentor both technical and business teams. This role offers the opportunity to work on cutting-edge technologies while contributing to the digital transformation initiatives of the organization and the opportunity to shape the enterprise integration landscape for a global SAP program. This is a remote, project-based role focused on project delivery (no ongoing run-state/operations support responsibilities).
What you will do
  • Lead integration initiatives from concept through to execution and delivery, ensuring alignment with business needs and program objectives.
  • Evaluate integration design options and guide teams towards best fit solutions within SAP Integration Suite, balancing performance, scalability, maintainability and security.
  • Architect, design and implement SAP CPI integration solutions, developing iFlows to connect SAP S/4 systems with legacy systems, external/third-party applications and non-SAP solutions across cloud and on-premise systems.
  • Develop and maintain integration artifacts including message mappings, value mappings, schema definitions, and transformations using Graphical Mapping, XSLT, and/or Groovy as needed.
  • Work with EDI protocols and standards (e.g., EDIFACT, X12, XSLT) to implement EDI integrations within the SAP CPI environment.
  • Define, maintain and enhance the integration architecture, best practices and standard operating procedures by identifying opportunities for continuous improvement and implementing process and design optimizations.
  • Collaborate with enterprise architects, functional leads and business stakeholders to gather business requirements and translate them into technical specifications and align integration designs with enterprise and program goals.
  • Contribute to and enforce integration architecture, best practices, and standard operating procedures; identify opportunities for continuous improvement and implement process/design optimizations.
  • Maintain high-quality project documentation including interface specifications, mapping documents, security/connection details, and deployment/run instructions for project handoff.
  • Maintain and support SAP CPI integrations by monitoring performance, troubleshooting integration issues and performing root cause analysis to ensure timely resolution during project phases.
  • Stay updated with the latest developments in SAP Cloud Integration tools and technologies, integrating new functionalities as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with organizational standards for documentation and change management processes.

What you will bring
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Systems, or related field.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience with SAP integrations area and at least 4 years of extensive hands-on experience with SAP Cloud Platform Integration (CPI)/ SAP Integration Suite/Cloud Connector, including iFlow design, integration scenarios, mapping, and monitoring.
  • Proven ability to lead technical discussions with both technical and business teams and make architecture-level decisions.
  • Strong experience designing and building integrations using REST/SOAP APIs, OData, SFTP, HTTP/S, JSON, XML, XSLT, and related integration protocols/patterns.
  • Experience with EDI integration using SAP Integration Suite, including:
  • Knowledge of EDI standards such as X12 and/or EDIFACT

  • Strong understanding of integration security, including management of security artifacts, certificates/keys, and encryption/decryption methods for sensitive data (as applicable), including secure file transfer using SSH keys.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within distributed teams.
  • Proficiency in English is required.
  • Experience integrating with SaaS platforms (e.g., SuccessFactors, SAP DMC)
  • Knowledge of, or previous experience with, JAVA and/or Groovy Scripting and CPI TPM (Trading Partner Mgmt).
