What is a refresh tech?

Refresh Techs, also known as Refresh Technicians, are IT professionals responsible for upgrading, replacing, or installing new hardware and software on computers and devices within an organization. Their duties often include setting up new systems, migrating user data, troubleshooting technical issues, and ensuring that all equipment meets company standards. They play a crucial role during large-scale technology refresh projects, such as company-wide hardware upgrades or software rollouts. Refresh Techs typically work as part of an IT team and may interact directly with end-users to ensure a smooth transition.

What does a refresh tech do?

As a Refresh Tech, your daily tasks often include imaging and deploying new computers, migrating user data, and ensuring hardware and software are correctly configured according to company standards. You will also be responsible for troubleshooting issues that arise during the refresh process and documenting your work for future reference. Collaboration is key, as you’ll work closely with help desk staff, network administrators, and end users to minimize disruptions and ensure a smooth transition. This role requires strong communication skills and attention to detail, as well as the ability to adapt to evolving technology environments.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a refresh tech?

To thrive as a Refresh Tech, you need strong hardware troubleshooting skills, knowledge of computer imaging, and experience with system upgrades, often supported by a relevant IT certification like CompTIA A+ or equivalent experience. Familiarity with asset management systems, deployment tools such as SCCM, and ticketing software is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are essential soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure efficient device refresh cycles, minimize user downtime, and support seamless technology transitions within organizations.
