Job description

Position Title: Pot Repair Technician

Reports To: Mill Services Manager

Location:


Overview of Position:

The Pot Repair Technician is responsible for inspecting, repairing, and maintaining slag pots and related refractory equipment within the steel mill. This role ensures that slag handling operations run safely, efficiently, and with minimal downtime. The technician will work closely with the maintenance and operations teams to perform welding, refractory repair, fabrication, and preventive maintenance activities, adhering to all safety and quality standards.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Inspect slag pots for cracks, structural weaknesses, or refractory wear.
  • Perform welding, cutting, and grinding to repair slag pots and extend their service life.
  • Remove and replace refractory linings as needed, including preparation and installation of refractory materials.
  • Conduct preventive maintenance on pots and associated equipment to minimize unplanned downtime.
  • Operate heavy tools and equipment such as torches, welders, grinders, overhead cranes, and forklifts safely and effectively.
  • Document repairs, maintenance activities, and equipment conditions in logs or computerized systems.
  • Assist with transporting pots and materials within the mill environment.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety, environmental, and quality standards.
  • Collaborate with other maintenance and production personnel to prioritize repair schedules.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area, ensuring tools and equipment are properly stored.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; technical or trade school preferred.
  • Experience in welding, cutting, fabrication, or refractory installation strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of steel mill operations, particularly slag handling, is an asset.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and safety instructions.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to work in hot, dusty, and physically demanding environments.


Work Environment:

This job takes place in a Steel Mill setting, requiring a sense of high-level safety reverence using the required PPE for the environment.


Physical Demand:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to speak and listen in potentially noisy indoor and outdoor environments. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk on both flat and uneven surfaces, sit, climb stairs, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, and reach with hands and arms. This job requires the employee to lift at least 50 pounds on a regular basis.


Required Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Willingness to work in a Steel Mill
  • Experience in a manufacturing or industrial setting preferred but not required

Compensation and Benefits

Base pay $28.00 an hour.
