Description

The Special Events Officer (SEO)  is a key role supporting public safety and event operations by managing temporary traffic signals (red light boxes) and ensuring the controlled flow of vehicles and pedestrians at high-traffic events. This position is well-suited for current, retired, or reserve law enforcement officers who want to remain active in the field without the demands of traditional patrol work.  

Special Event Officers operate in a public-facing capacity, working in collaboration with certified flaggers, MTTM crews, and event coordinators to ensure safety, efficiency, and compliance with traffic control plans. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Operate and monitor red light box traffic control systems at designated intersections or entry points during events.

Maintain situational awareness to ensure safe vehicle and pedestrian flow based on real-time conditions.

Coordinate with flaggers and MTTM staff to implement signal adjustments as needed.

Serve as a uniformed, visible presence for both traffic control and event safety assurance.

Provide directional support and respond to public inquiries or safety concerns with professionalism.

Complete event shift logs, communicate equipment needs, and report incidents.

Other duties as assigned based on event size, location, and staffing plan.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Understanding of basic traffic signal logic and emergency override functions

Ability to stay alert and focused during long shifts

Strong communication and de-escalation skills

Ability to quickly learn and apply site-specific control protocols

Comfortable working outdoors and in varying weather conditions

Must possess a valid driver's license and clean driving record

Professional appearance and demeanor while in uniform

 


Requirements

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND LICENSING

Must be currently or formerly commissioned as a law enforcement officer (full-time, part-time, reserve, or retired) in TN

Must maintain or obtain a valid Tennessee Guard Card/license if required

High school diploma or equivalent

Completion of MTTM-provided orientation and signal equipment training

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

Standing and walking for extended periods (up to 10-12 hours)

Outdoor conditions, including heat, rain, and cold

Occasional lifting of equipment up to 20 lbs

Work in proximity to moving vehicles, temporary barricades, and electrical equipment

Use of high-visibility apparel and PPE provided by MTTM

SAFETY AND PROFESSIONAL EXPECTATIONS

Special Event Officers are expected to follow all Environmental Health & Safety policies and act as ambassadors of MTTM's safety culture. Officers must demonstrate integrity, accountability, and a commitment to safeguarding lives-one lane at a time.

This position is part-time and event-driven, offering flexible scheduling with premium assignments during concerts, festivals, sporting events, and civic functions. Additional responsibilities may be assigned based on site needs and traffic complexity.
