Job description

Position Summary:
The Staff Accountant supports the work of the Finance Department by managing daily accounting tasks, under the supervision of the Controller. This role involves recording, reconciling, preparing, and reviewing financial transactions in compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Accounting and Reconciliation:
  • Utilize accounting software to record, track, and reconcile accounts
  • Accurately record monthly, quarterly, and yearly accruals in the general ledger
  • Perform monthly reconciliation of all bank accounts as well as corporate credit card purchases; record transactions in the general ledger
  • Prepare monthly reconciliation schedules for investments, mortgages, prepaid expenses, fixed assets and intercompany accounts

Payroll and Transactions:
  • Prepare payroll schedules and record payroll transactions monthly
  • Record all cash receipts deposited into bank accounts

Financial Reporting and Budgeting:
  • Ensure revenue and expenses are allocated correctly to general ledger accounts, departments, locations, and job IDs
  • Reconcile monthly income and expense accounts for all entities
  • Analyze budgets and report significant variances to the Controller
  • Assist in preparing ad hoc reports for third parties (e.g., HUD, Housing Authority, Insurance Agencies)

Audit and Compliance:
  • Support year-end and fiscal audits by preparing requested items
  • Record monthly, quarterly, and annual general ledger transactions, including adjusting entries and year-end accrual of revenues and expenses
  • Assist with reconciling accounting and rental property software platforms

Other Responsibilities:
  • Conduct research and analysis for various departments/programs as needed
  • Maintain and update accounting records and files on a regular basis

Qualifications:
Required:
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or a related field
  • 3-5 years of experience in a similar accounting role
  • Strong understanding of GAAP
  • Ability to independently manage time effectively to ensure deadlines are met
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel for analysis and schedule creation
  • Experience with recording accruals for an accrual-based accounting organization
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
