They coordinate with authors, editors, designers, and marketing teams to ensure that projects are completed on time and within budget. Publishing Managers also develop strategies for acquiring new content, managing copyright issues, and maximizing the commercial success of publications. Their role often involves staying updated on industry trends and adapting to new technologies in publishing.

What does a publishing manager do?

A publishing manager takes care of all publications for a company or client. In this job, you often act as the primary contact between the media and a publication. Your specific job duties may include supervising and creating training materials for publishing staff, planning and implementing marketing campaigns, and staying up to date on market trends. You also review and edit print material, approve all copy before publication, negotiate contracts or licensing agreements, and participate in reviews or other promotional activities related to the project. In this role, you may work under a publishing director. This is not an entry-level position, so you should have several years of experience in publishing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a publishing manager?

To thrive as a Publishing Manager, you need strong project management abilities, editorial expertise, and often a degree in publishing, communications, or a related field. Familiarity with content management systems (CMS), digital publishing tools like Adobe InDesign, and knowledge of copyright and publishing standards are typically required. Balancing creative input with commercial goals can be challenging, especially when feedback cycles are frequent or timelines shift. Effective communication and strong organizational skills are essential for mediating between stakeholders and ensuring projects stay on track. Building positive, professional relationships helps mitigate conflicts and keeps the publishing process smooth and efficient.

Job description

About Gusto
At Gusto, we're on a mission to grow the small business economy. We handle the hard stuff - payroll, health insurance, 401(k)s, and HR - so owners can focus on their craft and their customers. With teams in Denver, San Francisco, and New York, we support more than 500,000 small businesses nationwide and are building a workplace that reflects the people we serve.
All full-time employees receive competitive base pay, benefits, and equity (RSUs) - because everyone who helps build Gusto should share in its success. Offer amounts are determined by role, level, and location. Learn more about our Total Rewards philosophy.
AI is a fundamental part of how work gets done at Gusto. We expect all team members to actively engage with AI tools relevant to their role and grow their fluency as the technology evolves. AI experience requirements vary by role and will be assessed during the interview process.
About the role
Gusto is hiring a Social Media Manager to own organic social strategy and execution across our brand channels. This role leads day-to-day content strategy, agency collaboration, and executive amplification, and is the operational backbone of the internal social team, working closely with the Head of Social, an Influencer Lead, and our social media agency of record.
What you'll do
  • Own organic social strategy and content across LinkedIn, X, Instagram, TikTok, Threads, YouTube Shorts, and Facebook, aligned to brand voice and content pillars.
  • Run the executive and founder social amplification program: partner with leadership on strategy, coordinate drafting and asset production, and manage publishing and engagement on executive accounts.
  • Serve as the primary day-to-day partner to our social creative and production agency of record, briefing campaigns, reviewing output against approved strategy, and approving content per our review framework.
  • Coordinate the organic-to-paid flywheel, working with performance marketing to identify organic content worth amplifying with paid spend.
  • Build and maintain social content and share-of-voice reporting, and contribute to monthly performance narratives for marketing leadership.
  • Lead social support for major product and partnership launches, coordinating with product marketing, comms, and legal stakeholders on messaging and timing.
  • Manage the social tooling stack (publishing, listening, and analytics platforms), including vendor relationships and renewals.
  • Drive proactive community management and trend-hijacking to build brand affinity, while acting as the escalation point for CX on sensitive engagement and partnering with the Head of Social on crisis response.
What we're looking for
  • 7+ years managing organic social media for a consumer or B2B brand, including hands-on content strategy and channel management.
  • Experience managing an external creative or content agency, including briefing, review, and performance feedback loops.
  • Comfort working with social analytics and listening tools, and translating performance data into a clear narrative for stakeholders.
  • Strong cross-functional collaborator, able to work with comms, legal, CX, and marketing partners under time pressure.
  • Sound judgment on brand voice, risk, and escalation, especially for sensitive or fast-moving content.
  • Familiarity with social publishing/listening platforms (e.g., Sprout Social or similar), and content tools such as Canva, CapCut, or comparable editing software.
  • A strong eye for short-form video storyboarding, basic editing, and native platform trends across TikTok, Reels, and Shorts.
  • Experience collaborating with creators and integrating user/creator-generated content (UGC/CGC) into organic brand feeds.
Nice to have
  • Experience running or contributing to a crisis communications response on social.
  • Experience working with AI-assisted marketing workflows.
  • Background in HR, payroll, fintech, or another regulated B2B category.
  • Experience supporting executive or founder-level thought leadership content.

Compensation
Our cash compensation amount for this role is $104,490/yr to $128,000/yr in Denver and $140,000/yr to $170,500/yr for San Francisco & New York. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate location, experience and expertise, and may vary from the amounts listed above.
Gusto has physical office spaces in Denver, San Francisco, and New York City. Employees who are based in those locations will be expected to work from the office on designated days approximately 2-3 days per week (or more depending on role). The same office expectations apply to all Symmetry roles, Gusto's subsidiary, whose physical office is in Scottsdale.
Note: The San Francisco office expectations encompass both the San Francisco and San Jose metro areas.
When approved to work from a location other than a Gusto office, a secure, reliable, and consistent internet connection is required. This includes non-office days for hybrid employees.
