Job Description The City of Avondale is accepting applications for Library Assistant This posting will close upon receipt of 150 applications or at 11:59 PM on 08/31/2026, whichever comes first. This is a part-time position scheduled to work less than 19.5 hours per week. This position requires participation in a rotational schedule, which may include mornings, evenings, and weekends

The Library Assistant assists patrons with information about library materials, equipment, programs, and services. They assist both library staff and patrons in person, online, and over the phone. Responsibilities include circulating library materials, providing computer and printer assistance, and ensuring that library technology is functioning.

The Library Assistant also addresses patron behavior issues in the library and may need to directly resolve disputes, enforce policies, and handle difficult situations with patrons. Additional duties include assisting with programs, outreach, and special events, as well as frequently processing incoming materials. A successful candidate for this position will develop and maintain relationships with coworkers and patrons, and resolve service, circulation, and technology issues, demonstrating a high standard of customer service and adept critical thinking skills.

A successful candidate will also possess direct customer service experience, be able to model and champion intellectual freedom, and be comfortable and confident working directly with diverse communities. This role requires flexibility, as the schedule includes morning, afternoon, evening, and weekend hours. Essential Functions Educates, trains, and assists patrons in using library technology, equipment, and resources, primarily PCs and peripherals.

Provides information assistance and readers' advisory assistance in person, online, or over the phone, including the use of library resources, equipment, and programming. Assists patrons with check-in and check-out and locating materials at a branch or within the Avondale library system. May perform other duties related to circulation, such as processing incoming materials.

Resolves problems with patrons' accounts and records. Resolves patron incidents, problems, concerns, and conflicts, ensuring that policies are followed or redirected to appropriate colleagues. Assists staff and patrons with the scheduling and use of facility meeting rooms and study rooms.

Assists patrons in the use of library collections through reference interviews, literature, and online searches. Refers to questions to a librarian, as necessary. Helps with and delivers library programs, special events, and outreach activities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications A High School Diploma or GED equivalency is required. One (1) year of customer service experience involving regular, direct interaction with the public. Two (2) years of computer experience and/or training.

Proficiency in Spanish is preferred. The ability to communicate effectively in Spanish will enhance the Library Assistant's ability to meet the needs of all patrons. Valid Arizona Operator's Driver's License or the ability to obtain a license by time of hire.
