Job Description SummaryReporting to the Senior Vice President and Provost, the Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs provides leadership for the Office of Faculty Affairs, in service of the professional well-being and development of faculty, and provides direct counsel and support to the Provost on matters of high importance related to faculty. As a member of the Provost's senior team, the Associate Provost participates in decision-making and policy formulation, especially on academic and personnel matters pertaining to the faculty. This role requires strong collaboration and the ability to engage with Academic Deans, Department Chairs and unit directors, the Office of General Counsel, the University Senate, a broad range of faculty constituencies (e.g., tenured/tenure track, professional track, librarian, adjuncts), and various other campus offices on a myriad of matters relevant to faculty.
This role supports faculty excellence, promoting professional well-being and career development while advancing the goals and priorities of the university's strategic plan. The Associate Provost administers and directs various programs in support of this work, including:
-Oversight of the university-level Appointment, Promotion, and Tenure Process and Appeals Process
-Appointment and/or promotion of professional track faculty and librarians, and appointment of other non-tenure track faculty such as Professor of the Practice
-Faculty recruitment and retention initiatives
-Faculty awards and recognition selection processes
-Orientation Programs (e.g., New Faculty Orientation and New Chairs Orientation)
-Faculty Support Team
-Academic Leadership Forum
-Faculty databases and reporting
-Professional-track faculty initiatives
-Campus-level faculty awards and honorifics tracking and management
-Faculty leadership development and mentoring programs through campus-initiated efforts (e.g., Fearless Unit Leadership for Unit Heads and Fearless Leadership Foundations for academic program directors and others starting their academic leadership journey) and those through the Big Ten Academic Alliance ("Big 10").
-Various technology platforms: faculty annual reporting, tenure delay requests, sabbatical requests, workflow (APT, AEP, other)
-Facilitating and coordinating with University offices (e.g., the Office of Civil Rights and Sexual Misconduct, the Office of General Counsel, the Office Of Research Integrity, and the Division of Research) to ensure faculty compliance with relevant policies and procedures
-Assisting and facilitating the University's anticipated faculty collective bargaining efforts
The Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs also helps to design, interpret, and implement policies and programs related to the faculty; and provides information, data, and research on faculty resources and issues. This role oversees a diverse portfolio of faculty-related policies and procedures as implemented by the University System of Maryland (USM) and the University. The Associate Provost also represents the Division of Academic Affairs on committees, working groups, and teams (e.g. the Senate's Faculty Affairs Committee, Faculty Honorifics Working Group, and the university BETA team).
The Associate Provost represents the Provost at key meetings and events, coordinating with internal and external partners as a decision maker and leader. The Associate Provost will also represent the division in our system of shared governance and direct various campus working groups and leadership teams, special projects, and key initiatives.
The Associate Provost serves at the pleasure of the Provost, and the portfolio may change over time to meet the needs of the division.

Qualifications/Requirements:
A tenured appointment at the rank of Professor in an academic unit and a distinguished record of scholarly and/or creative achievement are required. A minimum of three (3) years of leadership experience in faculty affairs or equivalent (e.g., chair, associate dean, dean), to include managing and/or directing promotion and tenure reviews at the University of Maryland, College Park campus, is required. The position calls for superior verbal and written communication skills; management of a team including two directors, multiple staff members, and graduate assistants; a high level of discretion and integrity; the ability to work with many groups of people and units on the campus; a commitment to belonging and inclusion; and the desire to advance the development of a highly qualified and successful faculty at the University.
Licenses/Certifications:
In addition to being a tenured Professor at UMD, the appointee shall have established a national and, where appropriate, international reputation for outstanding research, scholarship, or artistic creativity, and a distinguished record of teaching.
