Cardiothoracic Surgery NP/PA (Locum Tenens) โ€“ Mishawaka, IN

High-Acuity Surgical Opportunity in North Central Indiana

Are you an experienced Cardiothoracic Surgery (CTS) Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner with expert surgical skills? A premier, faith-based health system in North Central Indiana is seeking a qualified locum provider to join their CTS team. This role is designed for a clinician who excels in the Operating Room, specifically in Maquet vein harvesting, and is comfortable managing the full continuum of cardiac surgical care.

The Opportunity

Work alongside expert attending Cardiothoracic Surgeons in a role that balances technical surgical assisting with comprehensive inpatient management.

  • Surgical Focus: Serve as 1st Assist in the OR. Mastery of vein and artery harvesting using the Maquet system is a mandatory requirement for this position.

  • Clinical Scope: A typical day begins with hospital rounding, followed by dedicated time in the OR. Responsibilities include pre-op physical exams, chest tube and pacing wire removal, wound care (debridement, suture/staple removal), and formulating detailed care plans.

  • Patient Volume: Manage an average of 10 outpatient and 5โ€“8 inpatient cases per day.

  • Call Structure: Call requirements are for the OR only (no office call) with call-back as needed.

  • Team & Support: Collaborative environment involving multidisciplinary communication with surgeons, nursing, respiratory, and cardiac rehab staff. Documentation is performed in EPIC.

Compensation & Logistics
  • Hourly Rate: Competitive pay starting from $175/hr

  • Call Rates: Structured pay for Night and 24-hour call (including holiday premiums) with built-in gratis hours.

  • Local Focus: The facility highly prefers local candidates (within driving distance; no flights).

  • Credentialing: Please note that the health system does not reimburse for application or credentialing fees.

Candidate Requirements

To maintain excellence in advanced cardiac procedures, candidates must meet the following:

  • Licensure: Active Indiana State License is required at the time of submission.

  • Certification: National certification is mandatory (NCCPA for PAs; AANP for NPs).

  • Experience: Must have proven experience in Maquet Vein Harvesting and 1st assisting. New graduates will not be considered; preference is for those with deep CTS knowledge.

  • Health & Safety: Proof of COVID-19 vaccination is required.

  • Documentation: A current Self-Query NPDB report (pulled within the last 30 days) is required at the time of presentation.
