Job description

Position: Property Tax Clerk

Department: Auditor

Location: County/City Building – 2nd Floor

Status: Full Time

Salary: $41,496

Job Category: COMOT

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Description:

Incumbent serves as Property Tax Clerk for the St Joseph County Auditor’s Office, responsible for processing deeds for transfer of ownership, processing of deductions, maintenance of appropriate documentation, correction of taxing errors and assisting the public. This position is full-time, non-exempt and is covered under the Saint Joseph County Employee Policy Manual.

Hours are 8:00 A.M. to 4:30 P.M., Monday through Friday.

Essential Functions:

Accepts and processes property transfer documents, including deeds, land contracts, plats, affidavits and court orders.

Receives and processes applications for property tax deductions and credits, such as homestead, over 65, blind/disabled persons, and disabled veteran.

Processes property tax refunds and tax sale surplus claims by entering them in the Accounts Payable system.

Answers telephone and greets office visitors, providing information and assistance, taking messages and/or directing callers/visitors to appropriate individual or department.

Assists public with maps, land consolidations, etc. Assists other department personnel as needed.

Performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

High school diploma or GED.

Working knowledge of legal procedures concerning real property and personal property is preferred, with ability to apply procedures and requirements to specific tasks.

Ability to operate standard office equipment, including computer and department software applications (Windows OS, Excel, Outlook, Acrobat) keyboard, calculator, telephone and copier.

Ability to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing.
