Job description

Description Do you want a career that allows you to utilize your technical and creative skills/experience to design and manufacture a variety of signs for traffic control, City facilities, and other exciting projects. If so, the City of Harrisonburg Public Works Department's Sign Graphics Designer & Fabricator role may be the right position for you. The Sign Graphics Designer & Fabricator is a full-time position with benefits and a preferred hiring range of $23.93 - $26.33 per hour (equivalent to $49,774 - $54,766 annually); however, an exact salary will be dependent upon the selected candidate's qualifications/experience and in compliance with City policy

In this hands-on and creative role, you will turn work orders and verbal requests into high-quality signage for a wide range of applications, including banner, directional, facility, street, and traffic signs, using specialized graphic design software and computer-driven plotting equipment. You will produce finished signage from start to finish by proofing, trimming, sorting, assembling, and distributing materials, while working with substrates such as corrugated plastic, foam board, PVC, aluminum, and acrylic. This position also offers the opportunity to apply vinyl graphics to various surfaces, operate large-format printing equipment, and perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting to keep sign shop operations running efficiently.

Beyond production, this role is ideal for someone who enjoys blending technical skill with creativity and innovation. You will use computer-aided graphics software and related applications to develop sign designs, patterns, and lettering that align with City branding standards and the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). A detailed list of the ideal candidate's knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position is available in the Sign Graphics Designer & Fabricator class specification.

Minimum Qualifications Associates degree with coursework in graphic design or a related field and moderate (1-3 years) experience in graphic design. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be used to meet this requirement. Valid driver's license.
