What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Project Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Project Manager, you need strong organizational, leadership, and problem-solving abilities, typically supported by a degree in business or a related field. Familiarity with project management software such as MS Project, Asana, or Jira, as well as certifications like PMP or PRINCE2, is highly valued. Excellent communication, adaptability, and conflict resolution skills help build consensus and navigate team dynamics effectively. These skills ensure that projects are delivered on time, within scope, and to the satisfaction of stakeholders.

What is Project Momentum?

Project Momentum is not a standard job title but typically refers to a specific initiative or program within an organization aimed at driving progress, change, or improvement in a particular area. In many companies, Project Momentum may be the name given to a major project or transformation effort, often involving cross-functional teams and strategic goals. If you see 'Project Momentum' listed as a job, it likely means a role dedicated to managing, coordinating, or supporting this particular project. Responsibilities might include project planning, stakeholder communication, tracking progress, and ensuring targets are met. It's important to review the job description or ask the employer for clarification on the specific duties associated with this project.

What are some common challenges faced by project managers when maintaining momentum on long-term projects?

One of the main challenges project managers encounter is keeping team motivation high and ensuring consistent progress, especially during lengthy or complex projects. It can be difficult to maintain clear communication, manage shifting priorities, and prevent burnout over time. Successful project managers address these challenges by setting interim milestones, regularly recognizing team achievements, and fostering a collaborative environment where issues can be discussed openly and resolved quickly. Regular check-ins and transparent goal tracking also help keep everyone aligned and engaged throughout the project lifecycle.

Job description

Position: Project Manager – Capital IT Initiatives (FocusPoint Exclusive)
Location: Brentwood, TN
Worksite: Hybrid
Employment Type: Full time contract
Compensation: Commensurate with experience

Project Manager – Capital IT Initiatives

(Contract – FocusPoint)

FocusPoint is supporting a long‑standing enterprise partner on a set of capital‑funded IT initiatives. This is not a template PM assignment. You’ll operate across multiple concurrent workstreams, maintain momentum in a dynamic environment, and deliver high‑signal summaries that help leadership make fast, informed decisions. Success here requires strong organizational instincts, emotional intelligence, and the ability to read the room and remove friction without ceremony.

What You’ll Own

  • Coordinate multiple simultaneous IT projects, many of which are infrastructure‑centric (networking, refreshes, environment upgrades).
  • Manage vendor‑run workstreams and ensure alignment, clarity, and timely execution.
  • Track capital‑funded project components and maintain visibility into budget‑related considerations.
  • Produce concise, executive‑ready project summaries that highlight decisions, risks, and next steps.
  • Maintain project momentum in an environment where priorities shift and formal PMO structure is intentionally lightweight.
  • Facilitate communication across technical teams, vendors, and leadership — ensuring clarity without over‑processing.
  • Use Monday.com (or similar tools) to track workstreams, dependencies, and status at a practical, operational level.

What Success Looks Like

  • You keep multiple workstreams moving without relying on heavy frameworks or rigid process.
  • You anticipate friction points early and remove them before they slow execution.
  • You deliver high‑signal updates that leadership trusts and acts on.
  • You build strong working relationships with technical teams and vendors.
  • You maintain clarity and momentum even when priorities shift.
  • You operate with calm, confidence, and emotional intelligence.

Who Thrives in This Role

  • Operators who prefer clarity, momentum, and practical structure over ceremony.
  • PMs who can manage ambiguity and still deliver crisp, organized outcomes.
  • Communicators who can translate technical complexity into executive‑level clarity.
  • People who enjoy coordinating across vendors, infrastructure teams, and leadership.
  • Individuals who can read personalities, adjust their approach, and keep teams aligned.

Who Should Not Apply

  • Candidates seeking a software development PM role.
  • Candidates who rely on rigid PMO frameworks or heavy documentation.
  • Candidates who prefer single‑threaded project ownership.
  • Candidates who avoid stakeholder‑heavy environments or vendor coordination.

Experience That Helps

  • 3+ years managing multiple concurrent IT projects.
  • Experience with infrastructure‑related initiatives (networking, refreshes, environment upgrades).
  • Experience coordinating vendor‑run projects.
  • Experience preparing executive‑level summaries or high‑signal reporting.
  • Familiarity with Monday.com, Asana, Trello, or similar tools.
  • Strong organizational instincts and emotional intelligence.

Logistics

  • Location: Hybrid
  • Work Authorization: Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Engagement: Contract via FocusPoint.
