What Does a Progress Developer Do?

Progress is a programming language, also called Progress 4GL, that is used for business application development and created by a company with the same name. The programming language is now known as OpenEdge. As a Progress, or OpenEdge, developer, your responsibilities include using the OpenEdge language to create business applications with relational databases and programming tools. Progress’s tools can be integrated with numerous third-party applications, and they are suitable for developers working with web development, mobile apps, desktop software, and database applications. When seeking work in this technical specialty, you should look for jobs as both a Progress developer and an OpenEdge developer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Progress Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Progress Developer, you need a solid background in software development, proficiency in Progress OpenEdge ABL, and experience with database design and application architecture. Familiarity with integrated development environments (IDEs) like Progress Developer Studio and certifications in Progress OpenEdge are commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and effective communication skills help Progress Developers excel in team environments and client interactions. These skills ensure efficient, reliable application development and support business needs through robust and maintainable software solutions.

What are some common challenges a Progress Developer might face when integrating legacy systems with modern applications?

Progress Developers often encounter challenges when bridging older Progress/OpenEdge applications with newer technologies, such as web services or cloud platforms. These challenges include handling differences in data formats, ensuring data integrity, and maintaining performance while introducing new functionalities. Collaboration with business analysts and IT teams is crucial to understand legacy workflows and minimize disruption. Successful integration requires a solid understanding of both the existing Progress environment and modern development tools.

What are Progress Developers?

Progress Developers are software professionals who specialize in building and maintaining applications using Progress technologies, particularly the Progress OpenEdge development platform. They design, develop, and optimize business applications, typically using the ABL (Advanced Business Language) provided by Progress. These developers are skilled in creating robust database-driven applications, integrating with other systems, and supporting enterprise business processes. Their expertise is often crucial for organizations that rely on Progress solutions for their core operations.
