What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a program manager?

To thrive as a Program Manager, you need expertise in project planning, resource allocation, risk management, and a solid understanding of program life cycles, often supported by a bachelor's degree and experience in project or program management. Familiarity with tools like Microsoft Project, Jira, and certifications such as PMP or PgMP is typically required. Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills help in coordinating cross-functional teams and managing stakeholder expectations. These skills ensure that complex programs are delivered on time, within scope, and aligned with organizational goals.

What is program management?

Program management is the coordinated oversight and management of multiple related projects that align with an organization's strategic objectives. Program managers ensure that projects within a program are executed efficiently, risks are managed, and benefits are realized. They focus on aligning project outcomes with business goals, optimizing resources, and communicating progress to stakeholders. Unlike project managers, who handle individual projects, program managers oversee a collection of projects to deliver greater value.

How does a program manager typically collaborate with cross-functional teams to achieve project goals?

Program Managers work closely with cross-functional teams such as engineering, marketing, finance, and operations to align project objectives with organizational strategy. They facilitate communication, coordinate resources, and manage dependencies across teams to ensure milestones are met on schedule. Regular meetings, status updates, and transparent documentation are key practices, helping to address challenges proactively and keep everyone on track. This collaborative approach not only drives program success but also builds strong professional relationships across the organization.

How to get a job in program management?

Program managers typically have previous experience as a project manager or in a similar role. Most program managers have a bachelor’s degree in business or related field. The exact requirements for a program management job may vary from position to position, but you should be familiar with the organization’s mission and products as well as the specific needs listed in the job description. If a company is looking for a program manager for a specific department, experience working in that area is an obvious boon.

What is the difference between Program Management vs Project Management?

AspectProgram ManagementProject Management
FocusOversees multiple related projects to achieve strategic objectivesManages individual projects to meet specific goals
ScopeBroader, involving multiple projects and stakeholdersNarrower, focused on specific deliverables
ResponsibilitiesAligns projects with organizational strategy, manages interdependenciesPlans, executes, and closes individual projects

Is program management a good career path?

Program management is a viable career that involves coordinating multiple projects to achieve strategic objectives, often requiring skills in leadership, communication, and risk management. It offers opportunities across various industries and typically requires certifications like PMP or PgMP, along with experience in project management tools. The role can lead to senior leadership positions and offers competitive salaries.

What are program management jobs?

Program management jobs involve overseeing multiple related projects to ensure they align with organizational goals and deliver value. Program managers coordinate teams, manage budgets, and use tools like project management software to track progress and mitigate risks. These roles typically require strong leadership, communication skills, and often certification such as PMP or PgMP.

What are the top 3 skills of a program management?

Program management requires strong leadership, excellent communication, and advanced organizational skills to coordinate multiple projects and teams effectively. Additionally, proficiency in strategic planning and risk management is essential for successful program delivery. Familiarity with project management tools and methodologies like Agile or PMI standards also supports effective oversight.

Job description

SAIC is seeking an experienced Program Manager to lead and oversee a mission-critical modernization program delivering a modular, adaptable software suite of essential capabilities across multiple warfighting functions. In this role, you will serve as the primary leadership authority responsible for planning, executing, and delivering complex program objectives on schedule, within budget, and in alignment with Government requirements - while managing a diverse team of technical and operational professionals across a modern, open-architecture platform spanning enterprise cloud and tactical edge environments.

This position operates across cloud and tactical edge environments, supporting program planning, execution, and oversight across the full software development lifecycle - from initial concept through fielding - in both garrison and deployed settings, including Denied, Degraded, Intermittent, and Low Bandwidth (DDIL) environments.

The work is to be performed at the customer site at Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG), MD.

This role is contingent upon award news in Fall 2026.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage all aspects of program planning, execution, and delivery, ensuring program objectives, milestones, and deliverables are met on schedule, within budget, and in alignment with Government requirements across cloud and tactical edge environments
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive program management artifacts including integrated master schedules, risk registers, resource plans, and performance measurement baselines that provide real-time visibility into program health and progress
  • Serve as the primary point of contact and leadership authority for Government stakeholders, vendors, and development teams, ensuring program requirements, priorities, and decisions are accurately communicated, documented, and executed throughout the program lifecycle
  • Evaluate and validate program performance across all functional areas including systems engineering, software development, integration, cybersecurity, and UX design, ensuring all capabilities meet documented requirements and operational needs
  • Support planning and execution of tactical edge program activities, ensuring program approaches account for the unique operational constraints of DDIL environments including 72-hour autonomous operations and network synchronization requirements
  • Participate in product demonstrations, program reviews, and agile development ceremonies, providing executive-level assessment of program compliance, risk posture, and overall solution maturity against documented requirements and Government objectives
  • Collaborate with vendors, partners, functional leads, and Government stakeholders to identify and resolve program risks, resource constraints, schedule impacts, and capability gaps throughout the program lifecycle
