What is a program developer?

A program developer creates or enhances software to meet company needs. As a program developer, you make work on applications for different departments, such as human resources, sales, or data processing. Your job duties include designing software solutions that make the company procedures more efficient, programming the computer language, and troubleshooting the code to resolve bugs and errors. Program developers may work independently or on a team of software designers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a program developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Program Developer, you need strong programming skills, knowledge of software development methodologies, and typically a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools like version control systems (e.g., Git), integrated development environments (IDEs), and frameworks relevant to the target platform is essential. Problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication are important soft skills that set top developers apart. These competencies enable the creation of robust, maintainable software solutions and efficient collaboration within development teams.

What are some common challenges faced by program developers when collaborating with cross-functional teams?

Program Developers often work closely with designers, product managers, and quality assurance teams. A common challenge is ensuring clear communication across these diverse groups, as each may have different priorities and technical backgrounds. Balancing feature requests with technical feasibility and project deadlines can also be demanding. Successful Program Developers proactively seek feedback, clarify requirements, and use collaborative tools to keep everyone aligned, which helps minimize misunderstandings and bottlenecks.

What is the difference between Program Developer vs Software Engineer?

Job description

Job Overview:

Arm technology powers billions of devices, from the hardware inside the chip to the software and tools that bring it to life. Our Graduate Program brings together opportunities across engineering, AI, software and technical product development!

Graduates contribute to real products and projects, solve technical challenges and build expertise alongside experienced teams. Opportunities vary based on skills, interests and business needs.

What could you be doing?

Graduate opportunities span several areas, with some roles crossing more than one:

Hardware & Chip Design โ€” Design Arm technology through digital logic, RTL, FPGA, circuits, physical design or semiconductor technology.

Testing & Validation โ€” Test and debug technology before and after silicon using simulation, automation or lab-based validation.

Systems & Performance โ€” Explore processor and system behavior through architecture, modeling, workloads and benchmarking.

AI & Machine Learning โ€” Develop AI/ML solutions or apply technologies such as LLMs and agentic AI to technical challenges.

Software & Tools โ€” Build software, automation and engineering tools using C/C++, Python, Linux, embedded systems or CI/CD.

Technical Enablement โ€” Help developers and partners succeed with Arm through coding, technical problem-solving, research and communication.

Technical Product & Programs โ€” Help shape and deliver technical products and programs through strategy, data, planning, customer insights and coordination.

Graduates apply their skills, learn new technologies and contribute to work that shapes the future of computing!

We are looking for individuals who:

Hold (or are on track to hold) a university degree by the program start date. This can be a Bachelor's, Master's or PhD in Electronic Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science or another relevant technical or quantitative field.

Some opportunities may require a specific degree level, area of study or technical background. Candidates with alternative degrees will also be considered if they have relevant experience.

Qualities that will help your application stand out

Experience in every area isn't expected. We're interested in examples of:

  • Building, testing, debugging, analyzing, modeling or improving something technical.
  • Applying programming, hardware, AI/ML, data, simulation or other engineering tools.
  • Solving technical problems and using analysis or data to make decisions.
  • Learning new technologies and adapting to unfamiliar tools or systems.
  • Collaborating with others and communicating technical ideas clearly.

Relevant experience can come from coursework, research, internships, placements, personal projects, open-source contributions or other hands-on work.

As part of the application, we'll ask about interests, experience and technologies used. We'll review those responses alongside the resume to identify Graduate opportunities that align with each candidate's skills and interests.

We encourage early applications as we review them on a first come/first served basis.

Please note that relocation support is available for this role for domestic moves within the country. Visa sponsorship support is also available for candidates who require it.

In Return:

As you develop in role, youโ€™ll have clear opportunities to progress within the salary range at Arm. With mid-year and year-end reviews, youโ€™ll have two formal progression windows each year, recognizing your growth.

You can also attend our โ€œGrad-teach-Gradsโ€ workshops, guest speaker series, and social events to expand your knowledge. If youโ€™d like to get more involved, you can join the Graduate Committee to further develop your planning, networking, and coordination skills.

Youโ€™ll be invited to our Global Graduate Conference (GGC) โ€” an annual event where graduates hear from executive leaders, guest speakers, and build lasting connections.

With many of our leaders and technical specialists having originally joined as aย Graduate, will you be next?

We value people as individuals and our dedication is to reward people competitively and equitably for the work they do and the skills and experience they bring to Arm. Salary is only one component of Arm's offering. The total reward package will be shared with candidates during the recruitment and selection process.

Accommodations at Arm

At Arm, we want to build extraordinary teams. If you need an adjustment or an accommodation during the recruitment process, please email accommodations@arm.com. To note, by sending us the requested information, you consent to its use by Arm to arrange for appropriate accommodations. All accommodation or adjustment requests will be treated with confidentiality, and information concerning these requests will only be disclosed as necessary to provide the accommodation. Although this is not an exhaustive list, examples of support include breaks between interviews, having documents read aloud, or office accessibility. Please email us about anything we can do to accommodate you during the recruitment process.

Hybrid Working at Arm

Arm's approach to hybrid working is designed to create a working environment that supports both high performance and personal wellbeing. We believe in bringing people together face to face to enable us to work at pace, whilst recognizing the value of flexibility. Within that framework, we empower groups/teams to determine their own hybrid working patterns, depending on the work and the team's needs. Details of what this means for each role will be shared upon application. In some cases, the flexibility we can offer is limited by local legal, regulatory, tax, or other considerations, and where this is the case, we will collaborate with you to find the best solution. Please talk to us to find out more about what this could look like for you.

Equal Opportunities at Arm

Arm is an equal opportunity employer, committed to providing an environment of mutual respect where equal opportunities are available to all applicants and colleagues. We are a diverse organization of dedicated and innovative individuals, and don't discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or status as a protected veteran.
