Job Purpose and Focus
To assist students with disabilities with classroom activities, modifications, transportation, personal needs, and personal hygiene needs as directed by the teacher, school nurse, and/or Director of Student Support Services. This person is assigned to one or more students with unique needs and may be required to move with student(s) if the school site changes.
Essential Qualifications and Requirements
  • Meets state definition of "Highly Qualified"
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Certification in Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) preferred
  • Demonstrates human relations skills, especially in working with students
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, administration, and parents
  • Ability to follow direction of certified staff
  • Ability to supervise students in structured and unstructured situations
  • Possession of excellent decision-making and problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge of activities performed by student's teachers
  • Knowledge of daily routines of the classroom
  • General knowledge of student handbook rules
  • General knowledge of procedures to follow in the event of an emergency
  • Experience working with children
  • Experience working with persons with disabilities
  • Willingness to learn the unique educational and/or personal needs to assist a student with a disability
  • Ability to assist a bus driver with the loading, unloading and monitoring of students with disabilities while on bus may be required
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding student issues
  • Good physical and emotional health

Essential Functions and Representative Duties
  • Provide instructional reinforcement and support through one-to-one or small group instruction with teacher-directed objectives/assignments in exceptional education or regular classes as appropriate
  • Provide follow through on individual student's behavior management program
  • Assist with student physical and hygiene needs such diapering, toileting, and catheterization; administering medication (training provided as needed)
  • Use effective positive interpersonal communication skills
  • Participate in training provided by the District to enhance skills needed for working with exceptional students
  • Provide outstanding customer service, and use positive interpersonal communicational skills.
  • Ensure compliance with Board rules and applicable federal laws and regulations
  • Attend appropriate meetings and professional development training as requested in accordance with district procedures
  • Assist with lunch, snack, and clean-up routines
  • Assist teachers in working with student behavior issues
  • Respond to parents and assist them when first-hand information under the direction of the principal or teacher
  • Keep accurate records/data of student progress and /or behavior assessments
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Terms of Employment
Salary and fringe benefits in accordance with the current CMOPP Collective Bargaining Agreement with The Board of Education, this is a level C ($9.25-$15.15/hr.) position, 28.5-29.5 hours per week.
Work Environment
Must be able to use a variety of equipment and classroom tools such as computers, copiers, typewriters, calculators, pencils, scissors, and equipment for children with special needs, etc. Must be able to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
Evaluation/Performance Measurements
Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Support Personnel. Criteria for performance include but are not limited to:

  • Participation in specific training or workshop opportunities
  • Demonstration of interpersonal, time, conflict, and stress management skills
  • Production and efficiency related to job duties
