What Is a Professor?
A professor teaches courses at a college or a university in a specific subject. As a professor, your job duties consist of developing curricula, creating lessons, giving lectures, advising students, and grading coursework. Other responsibilities involve staying current in their field by performing research, reading academic materials, and attending conferences. You often start your academic career as an adjunct professor, working part-time and teaching a few courses. Some schools also have online courses run by online professors. After working for several years, college professors may gain tenure at their university, giving them a high level of job stability and freedom for their research.

The College
The College of Dentistry (CoD) distinguishes itself nationally by engaging faculty throughout the campus, around the state, and across the country in a host of experiences that provide enriching opportunities. The College of Dentistry is Ohio's only state-supported dental school, and it educates more than 60% of the state's dentists. Comprised of ten divisions, the college supports nine advanced education programs accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation. In pre-doctoral clinical education, eight small group practice clinics that focus on comprehensive care will provide an ideal environment for dental and dental hygiene students to work in a vertically integrated model for delivering care.
The Division
Initiated in 1949, the postdoctoral program in advanced periodontics at Ohio State has always been a combination of clinical training with graduate education. As the oldest continuously operating periodontal graduate program in the nation, it has been responsible for educating not only quality clinicians but also nationally and internationally renowned academicians.
This high degree of achievement has been substantiated by our graduates' thriving private practices, successful academic careers in teaching and research (e.g., professors and chairs of periodontology), outstanding work in the armed forces (e.g., Surgeon General of the Air Force) and exceptional service for organized dentistry (e.g., presidents of the American Dental Association, State Dental Associations, American Academy of Periodontology, Ohio Academy of Periodontology and Columbus Academy of Periodontology).
