A Private Chef for a family is responsible for preparing customized meals based on the family's preferences, dietary needs, and schedule. They often plan menus, shop for ingredients, cook meals, and sometimes handle kitchen organization and cleanup. Their role requires confidentiality, flexibility, and strong culinary skills to accommodate varying tastes and nutrition requirements.

What does a private chef family do?

A typical day for a Private Chef in a family home involves planning, shopping for, and preparing customized meals that align with family tastes and dietary needs. Responsibilities may include designing weekly menus, cooking breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and accommodating special occasions or guests. Job description

A private family in Atherton is seeking a polished, health-focused full-time private chef to support a family of four (two adults and two children, aged 9 and 3 years). This is a unique opportunity that differs from a traditional private chef position, since the majority of food prep will take place in a professionally equipped kitchen at the family's office in Menlo Park, located approximately 10 minutes from the family's Atherton residence. The chef will prepare, plate, and package meals at the office before transporting them to the home. Upon arrival, meals will be arranged in the home's chef's kitchen for the family to enjoy. There is very little day-to-day cooking performed inside the residence itself. The ideal candidate is passionate about exceptional food, highly organized, adaptable, and committed to maintaining restaurant-level standards in a private setting. Candidates coming directly from a high-quality restaurant or hospitality background who are excited to transition into private service are also welcome to apply.

Schedule:

  • Primarily Monday through Friday
  • Very occasional weekend coverage for entertaining or house guests
  • Full-time position

  • Prepare lunch and dinner for the family (daily)
  • Prepare breakfast items in advance
  • Prepare healthy snacks throughout the week
  • Prepare meals for weekends
  • Prepare food for outings, travel, and private air travel
  • Occasionally cook for family entertaining and guests
  • Prepare, plate, package, and transport meals from the Menlo Park office to the Atherton residence
  • Set meals up in the home's chef's kitchen for service
  • Maintain an exceptionally clean, organized, and sanitary kitchen
  • Manage kitchen inventory, grocery needs, and ingredient freshness
  • Consistently source and prepare high-quality organic, seasonal, and clean ingredients

Ideal Candidate:

  • Experience in an excellent restaurant, fine dining, luxury hospitality, or similar culinary environment
  • Strong interest in transitioning into private service (if relevant)
  • Versatile across a wide range of cuisines
  • Skilled in elegant, beautiful plating while maintaining an approachable, unfussy style
  • Passion for healthy, organic, and clean cooking
  • Professional, polished, and personable presentation
  • Highly organized, discreet, and able to work independently
  • Comfortable adapting menus to the family's lifestyle and travel schedule

Dietary Preferences:

  • Family of four (two adults and two children)
  • One family member has a shellfish allergy
  • Emphasis on healthy, organic, nutritious meals with clean ingredients

  • Starting compensation of $150,000+, depending on experience
  • Medical insurance with 70% employer-paid premium
  • Optional dental and vision coverage available at employee expense
  • 401(k) plan available
  • Two weeks of paid time off
  • Federal holidays
  • Generous discretionary bonus opportunity
