What does a meal prep chef do?

A meal prep chef specializes in preparing and packaging meals in advance, often for individuals, families, or businesses seeking convenient and healthy food options. Their responsibilities include planning menus, sourcing ingredients, cooking dishes in bulk, and ensuring meals are stored safely for later consumption. Meal prep chefs must be skilled in efficient cooking techniques, food safety, and nutritional planning to meet clients' dietary needs and preferences. They may work independently, for meal delivery services, or within larger kitchens. The goal is to save clients time while providing balanced, ready-to-eat meals.

How much do meal prep chefs make?

Meal prep chefs typically earn between $12 and $20 per hour, depending on experience, location, and whether they work independently or for a company. Salaries can also vary based on skill level, certifications, and the complexity of meal plans prepared.

What is the highest paying chef job?

The highest paying chef jobs are typically executive chefs or head chefs in high-end restaurants, hotels, or private clubs, with salaries often exceeding $100,000 annually. Specialized roles such as culinary directors or chefs with advanced certifications and extensive experience tend to earn the most in the culinary industry.

Do you need qualifications to be a prep chef?

To be a meal prep chef, formal qualifications are not always required, but relevant culinary training, food safety certifications, and cooking experience are often preferred by employers. Strong skills in food preparation, organization, and time management are essential for success in this role.

How much does a chef charge for meal prep?

Meal prep chefs typically charge between $10 and $30 per meal, depending on factors such as ingredient quality, complexity, and location. Some may offer package deals or hourly rates, which generally range from $15 to $50 per hour. What are some common challenges faced by Meal Prep Chefs and how can they be managed effectively?

Meal Prep Chefs often face challenges such as managing high volumes of orders, maintaining consistency in portion sizes and quality, and ensuring strict adherence to food safety standards. To address these, it's important to develop strong organizational skills, use detailed prep lists, and implement efficient batch-cooking techniques. Additionally, clear communication with kitchen staff and regular inventory checks help keep operations smooth and reduce the risk of errors or waste.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Meal Prep Chef, and why are they important?

About Us

We are a dynamic and creative household balancing work and travel. One member works from home, hosting podcasts and writing books, while the other works mostly outside the home. We care deeply about food and quality, but after making it a business for so long, we no longer enjoy cooking on a regular basis. We value healthy living and prioritize it in our daily routines. Our household also includes the recent addition of two playful kittens.

We strive for organization and efficiency in our lives. We're looking for someone who can help with daily admin tasks and follow recipes/cook and shop.

Who You Are / What We're Looking For

This role is designed to be 50-70% meal prep, with preference for cooking in your own space. The other time will focus on personal assistant tasks-tidying (no deep cleaning), errands, etc. You can work independently but also follow directions as needed. You enjoy a friendly work environment, but you know when to read the room and get things done. You're proactive, able to take the initiative, and skilled at maintaining food safety standards. You have an approachable demeanor, genuinely enjoy cooking, and can manage various household duties like tidying, cat care, and errands with ease. We'd love it if you can also house sit on occasion to care for the kittens (but this isn't a deal breaker!).

Key Responsibilities

Meal Support
  • Batch prep 4 recipes per week (3 mains, 1 side). Recipes will be provided.
  • Grocery shopping for meal-related items
  • Clean kitchen post-prep and maintain kitchen tidiness
Household Management & Organization
  • Reset and tidy rooms daily, maintaining overall neatness and ensuring the home is prepped for weekly cleaning services
  • Load/unload dishwasher, wipe surfaces, vacuum high traffic areas
  • Support packing/unpacking for travel
Inventory & Errands
  • Track and restock pantry, fridge, toiletries, and household supplies
  • Coordinate and manage household orders (Amazon, Costco, etc.)
  • Run errands: grocery shopping, returns, etc
  • Handle package pickup, mail sorting, and deliveries
Laundry & Linen Care
  • Wash, dry, fold, and organize family laundry (e.g., clothing, bedding, towels)
  • Keep laundry areas tidy and well-stocked with supplies
  • Handle special care items and delicates
Pet Care
  • Clean and change litter box on working days
  • Keep pet supplies stocked and organized
Vehicle Upkeep
  • Schedule and oversee vehicle maintenance, oil changes, and inspections
  • Ensure vehicles are fueled, cleaned, and organized
Deep Cleaning & Special Projects
  • Tackle occasional deep cleans (fridge, oven, baseboards)
  • Maintain humidifiers, washing machines, and air purifiers
  • Organize special projects (garage, kitten areas)
Administrative & Personal Assistant Support
  • Assist with travel planning, scheduling, and logistics
How to Apply

Please submit:

  • A brief introductory letter explaining why you'd be a great fit for this role
