What is a principal electrical engineer?

A principal electrical engineer serves as a project manager for electrical-related building or construction projects. In this role, your job duties may include designing electrical devices, ensuring proper installation, inspecting completed electrical work, and providing work estimates. You may also supervise a staff of junior engineers, overseeing their work, and ensure that the project is completed within the allotted timeframe and budget. Principal electrical engineers are often the liaison between the engineering team and upper management. You must create reports and communicate regular updates on the status of each project to ensure each stage is meeting deadline expectations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a principal electrical engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Principal Electrical Engineer, you need advanced expertise in electrical engineering principles, project management, and typically a bachelor's or master's degree in electrical engineering with a Professional Engineer (PE) license. Mastery of design software (such as AutoCAD and MATLAB), familiarity with industry standards (like IEEE), and experience with simulation and analysis tools are essential. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills enable effective team management and cross-functional collaboration. These skills ensure successful project delivery, innovation, and compliance with regulatory and safety standards in complex engineering environments.

How does a principal electrical engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during large-scale projects?

As a Principal Electrical Engineer, you will frequently work with multidisciplinary teams including mechanical, civil, and software engineers, as well as project managers and clients. Your role often involves leading technical discussions, providing guidance on electrical design solutions, and ensuring that electrical systems integrate seamlessly with other engineering disciplines. Effective communication and coordination are key, as you may also mentor junior engineers and facilitate design reviews to align project goals. This collaborative environment fosters innovation and ensures that complex projects are delivered efficiently and safely.

What is the difference between Principal Electrical Engineer vs Electrical Engineer?

Job description

Application close date:
Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the requisition is closed.
At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!
The role is part of the In-Space Systems business unit, which is focused on addressing two of the most compelling challenges in spaceflight today: space infrastructure and increasing mobility on-orbit.
At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. Blue National Security (BNS) is at the forefront of that mission - delivering advanced satellite systems and space capabilities that protect and empower those who defend our nation. We are building the next generation of LEO satellite platforms, and we need bold, experienced engineers who are ready to push the boundaries of what's possible in space power systems.
We are seeking a Principal Electrical Power Subsystem (EPS) Architect to join our growing BNS team. In this role, you will serve as a technical authority and key contributor to the design, development, and maturation of electrical power systems for LEO satellites and other novel technologies - from conventional solar and battery technology to novel, next-generation technologies that extend beyond today's state of the art. This is a rare opportunity to shape the future of on-orbit power at a company that moves fast, thinks big, and builds for real.
Special Mentions
  • Locations: Denver, CO | Reston, VA | Huntsville, AL (other major Blue Origin locations will be considered)
  • Relocation: Relocation assistance is available for qualified candidates
  • Travel: Up to 25% travel may be required; average expected travel is approximately 10%
  • Security Clearance: An active Top Secret (TS) U.S. Government security clearance is required at time of hire and must be maintained throughout employment

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Serve as a senior technical contributor and subject matter expert for LEO satellite electrical power subsystem design, development, and integration
  • Lead or co-lead EPS architecture trades, requirements definition, and system-level performance analysis across all mission phases
  • Develop and maintain power budgets, models, and simulations to assess system performance across orbital conditions, eclipse/sunlight cycles, and mission scenarios
  • Drive the design and integration of solar array systems, battery systems, and emerging/novel power generation and storage technologies
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with systems, thermal, structures, avionics, and software teams to ensure EPS compatibility, performance, and interface compliance
  • Champion R&D efforts to evaluate, mature, and transition novel power generation and energy storage technologies beyond current state-of-the-art solutions
  • Author and review technical documentation including specifications, interface control documents (ICDs), test procedures, and engineering reports
  • Support integration and test activities, including anomaly resolution and root cause analysis
  • Provide technical mentorship to junior and mid-level engineers, elevating team capability and fostering a culture of engineering excellence
  • Brief design and analysis results to program managers, government customers, and senior leadership

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline
  • 10+ years of hands-on experience in spacecraft or satellite electrical power subsystem design, development, and/or testing
  • Demonstrated experience with at least two of the following: solar array power generation systems, battery energy storage systems, or power management and distribution (PMAD)
  • Experience leading EPS design efforts, including requirements ownership, architecture trades, and subsystem performance analysis
  • Experience with power system modeling, simulation, and performance analysis tools
  • Familiarity with spacecraft-level systems engineering processes, including requirements development, verification, and validation
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present complex technical findings to audiences, including government customers
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, cross-functional team environment
