Job description

Legal Assistant / Legal Secretary (Contract)

Burlingame, CA - Onsite


You are an experienced Legal Assistant/Legal Secretary to provide administrative and legal support to 2–3 attorneys within a busy Legal Department. The ideal candidate has strong experience preparing legal documents, managing case files and deadlines, and filing pleadings with courts or administrative agencies. PERB filing experience is highly preferred but not required. This role requires a self-sufficient, detail-oriented professional who can work independently while supporting attorneys who are primarily remote.


This position pays: $38.00 to $42.00 per hour


What you will be doing:

  • Provide administrative and legal support to 2–3 attorneys.
  • Prepare and proofread legal correspondence, memoranda, pleadings, and other documents.
  • File legal documents and pleadings with courts and administrative agencies; track filing deadlines.
  • Support PERB filings and related administrative agency requirements as applicable.
  • Conduct routine legal research, including court rules and filing requirements.
  • Maintain electronic and paper case files, calendars, case management records, and reports.
  • Communicate with attorneys, courts, administrative agencies, government agencies, school districts, staff, members, and other parties to obtain information.
  • Process mail, telephone inquiries, referrals, time and expense entries, and case costs.
  • Assist with legal department programs, conferences, panels, workshops, recruitment, and administrative projects.
  • Perform other legal and administrative duties as assigned.


What you bring:

  • Approximately 5+ years of legal assistant/legal secretary experience, preferably supporting attorneys in a law firm, legal department, government, or similar environment.
  • Hands-on experience preparing legal documents and court/administrative agency filings; PERB experience is a strong plus.
  • Strong knowledge of legal documents, filing procedures, court rules, and administrative agency requirements.
  • Excellent proofreading, editing, formatting, organization, and deadline-management skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe; experience with Word and/or WordPerfect preferred.
  • Minimum typing speed of 55 WPM.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, exercise sound judgment, and take initiative.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and remain effective under pressure.
  • Associate’s or bachelor’s degree preferred; equivalent relevant legal experience considered.
  • This is a Legal Assistant/Legal Secretary position and does not require an attorney/JD.
