What is a POS system?

A point of sale system, often referred to as a POS system, is used by retail businesses to collect payment for purchases of products or services. It includes both software and hardware components. The point of sale system acts as a cash register, determines and displays the purchase amount, and processes payments for both cash and credit card transactions. Some POS systems also track inventory, manage customer loyalty programs, and provide sales reports. There are on-premise systems that are installed on local machines, and cloud-based ones that access information through the internet.

What is a POS system?

A POS (Point of Sale) system is a combination of hardware and software that businesses use to process sales transactions. It typically includes a computer or tablet, cash register, barcode scanner, receipt printer, and payment terminal. Modern POS systems also help manage inventory, track sales, and generate reports, making it easier for businesses to operate efficiently. They're commonly used in retail stores, restaurants, and other customer-facing businesses.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a POS system specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a POS System Specialist, you need a solid understanding of retail operations, basic IT troubleshooting, and experience with payment processing, often supported by a degree in information technology or related experience. Familiarity with specific POS software (such as Square, Toast, or NCR), network setups, and sometimes certifications like CompTIA A+ are advantageous. Strong problem-solving, customer service orientation, and effective communication skills are crucial for addressing user issues and training staff. These skills ensure smooth transaction processing and minimize downtime, directly impacting business efficiency and customer satisfaction.

What are some common challenges faced by POS system specialists, and how can they successfully overcome them?

POS System Specialists often face challenges such as troubleshooting hardware or software issues under time pressure, adapting to frequent software updates, and ensuring seamless integration with other business systems. To overcome these hurdles, specialists benefit from strong problem-solving skills, staying current with system updates, and developing clear communication channels with both technical teams and non-technical staff. Proactively documenting solutions and best practices can also streamline support and improve response times for future issues.

While cashiers focus on customer interaction and transaction handling, Pos Systems are tools used by cashiers and other staff to facilitate sales. Understanding the difference helps in job descriptions and training programs for retail and hospitality businesses.

Job description

WHO WE ARE:
Headquartered in Southern California, Skechers—the Comfort Technology Company®—has spent over 30 years helping men, women, and kids everywhere look and feel good. Comfort innovation is at the core of everything we do, driving the development of stylish, high-quality products at a great value. From our diverse footwear collections to our expanding range of apparel and accessories, Skechers is a complete lifestyle brand.
ABOUT THE ROLE:
The Procurement Manager – Sales & Point-of-Sale (POS) is a strategic sourcing role responsible for managing the end-to-end procurement of all sales enablement and POS materials that support Skechers' retail and wholesale operations. This individual will drive the sourcing, negotiation, and supplier management of all customer-facing and sales-supporting materials — including in-store displays, promotional signage, product packaging, shelf talkers, banners, catalogs, look books, and digital POS assets — ensuring brand consistency, cost efficiency, and on-time delivery across all sales channels. The role requires deep procurement expertise, a strong understanding of print and display production, and close collaboration with Marketing, Sales, and Retail Operations teams to align procurement activities with Skechers seasonal campaigns and commercial objectives. This is a high-impact procurement role that directly influences Skechers' brand visibility and sales performance.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

  • Lead all procurement activities for sales and POS materials, including in-store displays, promotional signage, shelf talkers, window graphics, banners, product packaging, hang tags, price tickets, catalogs, look books, sell sheets, and digital POS assets, ensuring brand compliance, quality standards, and cost optimization across all retail and wholesale channels.
  • Develop and execute category-specific procurement strategies for all sales and POS material segments, leveraging market intelligence, spend analysis, supplier benchmarking, and print production expertise to drive continuous cost savings and supply chain efficiencies.
  • Manage the full sourcing lifecycle for all sales and POS materials, including RFP/RFQ development, supplier evaluation and selection, contract negotiation, purchase order management, and delivery oversight to ensure materials arrive on time and meet Skechers quality and brand standards.
  • Negotiate and administer supplier contracts, pricing agreements, and service level agreements (SLAs) with print vendors, display manufacturers, packaging suppliers, and production houses, ensuring all terms protect Skechers' commercial interests and comply with legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Build and maintain a high-performing supplier base for sales and POS material categories, conducting regular performance reviews, managing KPIs, and driving accountability for quality, lead times, sustainability commitments, and pricing.
  • Partner closely with Marketing, Creative, Sales, Visual Merchandising, and Retail Operations teams to forecast demand, align procurement timelines with seasonal campaign calendars, and ensure all sales and POS materials are available for product launches, promotions, and new store openings.
  • Collaborate with Finance and budget owners to develop and manage annual procurement budgets for sales and POS material categories, tracking spend against targets and identifying opportunities for cost reduction, consolidation, and value engineering.
  • Drive sustainable procurement practices by identifying and sourcing eco-friendly, recyclable, and responsibly produced sales and POS materials in alignment with Skechers' corporate responsibility and environmental goals.
  • Ensure all procured sales and POS materials meet regulatory, safety, and compliance standards across all domestic and international markets where Skechers operates, including print quality, materials safety, and country-specific labeling requirements.

WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU:

  • Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain Management, Procurement, Marketing, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in procurement or strategic sourcing, with a focus on sales materials, POS materials, print production, or marketing supply chain within a global retail or consumer goods environment.
  • Deep knowledge of POS and sales material categories, including print production processes, display manufacturing, packaging, and signage production techniques.
  • Proven negotiation and contract management skills with a demonstrated track record of delivering cost savings, supplier consolidation, and performance improvements across print and display categories.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple concurrent sourcing projects and meet tight seasonal deadlines.
  • Proficiency in procurement and ERP systems such as SAP, Oracle, Coupa, or equivalent platforms, as well as project management tools such as Asana or Smartsheet.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills with the ability to collaborate across Marketing, Sales, Creative, and Operations teams.
  • CPSM (Certified Professional in Supply Management) or equivalent procurement certification.
  • Experience with sustainable sourcing and eco-friendly print and display material alternatives.
  • Familiarity with international supplier management, global print production, and multi-market POS distribution logistics.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, high-volume retail or wholesale procurement environment with exposure to seasonal campaign-driven procurement cycles.

The pay range for this position is $125,000-$165,000/yr USD.
