JOB SUMMARY:ย  The Aide assists the teacher(s) in a variety of ways to implement the instructional program including working directly with children in small groups or on a one-to-one basis; to establish effective rapport with students assigned to the classroom; to motivate students to develop attitudes and knowledge needed to provide a good educational foundation, in accordance with each pupil's ability.ย  The Aide assigned to a school bus assists with the supervision of student passengers on the bus, including securing student passengers in various types of safety restraints.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. High School diploma or equivalent, pursuant to WV Code 18A-2-5
  2. Criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code 18-5-15c
  3. Meet the definition of "Qualifications" in WV Code 18A-4-8e (state-approved competency test) as required.ย 
  4. Special Education Aides will be required to complete the Hampshire County approved management training ( such as Safety Care) upon the request of the school level administrator or Special Education Director (re-certification when necessary)
  5. Transportation aides will be required to complete CPR/First Aid in order to remain qualified for the position
  6. Transportation aides will be required to complete wheelchair/harness training for school buses
ย 
Pursuant to WV Code 18A-4-8:
'Paraprofessional' means a person certified pursuant to section two-a (18A-3-2a) to perform duties in a support capacity including, but not limited to facilitating in the instruction and direct or indirect supervision of students under the direction of a principal, a teacher or another designated professional educator'. 'Early Childhood Classroom Assistant Teacher I' (ECCAT) means a person who does not possess minimum of requirements for the permanent authorization, but is enrolled in and pursuing the requirements.ย  'Early Childhood Classroom Assistant II' means a person who has completed the minimum requirements for the state-awarded certificate for ECCAT.ย  'Early Childhood Classroom Assistant III' means a person who has completed the permanent authorization requirements as well as additional requirements comparable to current paraprofessional certificate.ย  ย 'Aide I' means those personnel selected and trained for teacher-aide classifications such as monitor aide, clerical aide, classroom aide or general aide. 'Aide II' means those personnel referred in the 'Aide I' classification who have completed a training program approved by the state board, or who hold a high school diploma or have received a general educational development certificate.ย  Only personnel classified in an Aide II class title may be employed as an aide in any special education program.ย  'Aide III' means those personnel referred to in the 'Aide I' classification who hold a high school diploma or a general educational development certificate and have completed six semester hours of college credit at an institution of higher education or are employed as an aide in a special education program and have one year's experience as an aide in special education; 'Aide IV' means personnel referred to in the 'Aide I' classification who hold a high school diploma or a general educational development certificate and who have completed eighteen hours of state board-approved college credit at a regionally accredited institution of higher education or who have completed fifteen hours of higher education and successfully completed an in-service training program determined by the state board to be the equivalent of three hours of college credit. ย 'Autism Mentor' means a person who works with autistic students and who meets the standards and experience to be determined by the State Board.ย  requirements.ย ย 
Paraprofessionals must successfully complete 36 hour post-secondary requirement as defined by policy 5202.
PreKindergarten and Kindergarten Aides must: (1) be eligible for the Early Childhood Classroom Assistant Teacher-Temporary Authorization and are required to complete the required course work within the next two years to keep Temporary Authorization current; or (2) be eligible for The Early Childhood Classroom Assistant Teacher Authorization.
Aides in Grades 1-3 must: (1) be eligible for the Early Childhood Classroom Assistant Teacher-Temporary Authorization and are required to complete the required course work within the next two years to keep Temporary Authorization current; or (2) be eligible for The Early Childhood Classroom Assistant Teacher Authorization.
Autism Mentors must:ย  (1) meet the qualifications of Aide III as delineated in WV Code 18A-4-8; (2) meet successful completion requirements of a staff development program related to providing instructional support to students with autism as determined by the WVDE and delineated in WVDE's Guidelines for Best Practices Autism Spectrum Disorders:ย  Services in WV Schools; (3) have two years of successful experience providing classroom instructional supports to a student(s) with autism under the supervision of a fully certified special education teacher; and (4) have the physical ability and stamina necessary to complete all job tasks, including tasks related to ensuring student safety

  • Assists teacher as needed with planning, preparation, and distribution of classroom materials
  • Conducts learning games with students according to established procedures
  • Assists with supervision and instruction of children; copying, cutting, coloring, etc., to construct materials and bulletin boards
  • Provides individualized and small-group instruction to reinforce skills that have been taught by the teacher
  • Assists in implementing lessons based on district and school objectives and needs and abilities of students

  • Complete all Medicaid documentation and billing by the end of each month
  • Responsible for completing the Random Moment Time Studies within a week of receiving the email.
  • May be necessary to ride a bus with a special needs student, and act as a transportation aide
  • Assists with supervision of student passengers on buses and maintains a safe traveling environment
  • Secure students in car seats, seat belts, harnesses, etc, while in transport
  • Secure wheelchair safely for transport
  • Other duties as assigned by the administrator
