The Sterling Police Department Police Cadet program is designed to help excellent, non-sworn candidates start a career as a Sterling Police Recruit. Cadets are hired as civilian positions and sponsored by the SPD to attend a Colorado P.O.S.T. (Police Officers Standards and Training) certification program. This offers the opportunity to build a foundation upon which they may become full-time Police Officers. Upon successfully graduating with a P.O.S.T. certificate, Cadets are sworn in as a Sterling Police Officer and enter the field training program.
The full job description for the Police Officer position can be found here: Police Officer Job Description.
Recruitment Notice
The City of Sterling Police Department is currently recruiting candidates for assignment to a Colorado P.O.S.T. academy, with anticipated academies in August 2026 or January 2027 depending on staffing needs. Academy placement is not guaranteed; qualified candidates may be placed on an eligibility list for future consideration.
The Cadet's job is to properly represent the Sterling Police Department while attending a P.O.S.T. academy, and to successfully obtain a P.O.S.T. certificate. Tuition and living expenses are covered during the academy, plus a $2,385.46 bi-weekly stipend while attending.
Cadets will be required to enter into a four-year agreement with the City of Sterling requiring repayment of academy-related expenses if they do not fulfill the full four-year commitment from their date of hire.
After graduation and upon being sworn in as a Sterling Police Officer, the Cadet transitions to a full-time Police Officer.(Salary $2,650.50 bi-weekly/$68,913 annually.)
Essential Functions & Responsibilities
Under the general supervision of the Police Corporal, Sergeant, Commander, and/or Police Chief, the Police Cadet will be expected to assist in the following duties as part of their academy training:

Classroom Learning and Case Study Analysis
Engage in classroom instruction covering topics such as criminal law, constitutional law, and procedural guidelines. Analyze case studies to understand the application of law enforcement practices and decision-making processes.
Physical Fitness and Tactical Training
