Overview

The Nexus Water Group team is hiring a Planning Engineer for ther Carolina Water Services of NC division. Responsible for  asset management and leading planning for capital and in-house projects for water and wastewater utilities and providing engineering expertise and support for Operations as needed. In addition to providing independent, professional engineering expertise and knowledge for utilities; will provide project management, business analysis and regulatory support for the operation of the facilities necessary for the production, treatment, and distribution of water as well as the collection, treatment, and discharge of wastewater.

Location and Schedule

This position will service North Carolina.

What You'll Do
  • Develops, modifies, and maintains the asset management program and project planning for water production, water distribution, wastewater collections, water and wastewater treatment processes and systems.
  • Creates and/or reviews project proposals and utility work designs; and if required provide stamp or seal of approval for engineering designs as the Professional Engineer.
  • Independently exercises sound professional judgement in the development of design criteria, selecting suitable processes, materials, and other aspects related to utility operations and capital project execution.
  • Engages with regulatory agencies, other utility operators and technical personnel as needed to facilitate continuing utility operations and capital project execution.
  • Develops the asset management program.
  • Works with the Project Management team in the project planning and design phases.
  • Prepares engineering plans, specifications, and cost estimates within set budget constraints.
  • Provides Project Engineering Oversight for several mid-sized or larger utility projects on an ongoing basis.
  • Selects and specifies materials, technologies and equipment for projects.
  • Works with internal and/or external Project Management teams to develop processes and procedures standards for project delivery
  • Works with the project team to hire and oversee external contractors or consultants based on capital project needs.
  • Performs inspections to ensure that the construction of the utility projects follow the design documents and design intentions; occasionally performs testing.
  • Works with internal and external construction resources to coordinate construction of the engineering plans, communicating project schedule and tasks.
  • Acts as designated project manager to lead and manage projects on an as-needed basis.
  • Acts as construction superintendent on an as-needed basis to ensure project controls are in place and procedures are executed safely and properly according to requirements.
  • Coordinates with internal and/or external project teams in response to capital project challenges to review and approve change order and cost proposals, modifying ongoing projects as required.
  • Plans for and reviews updates to construction and engineering standards.
  • Conducts hydraulic system analysis including usage of and updates to water distribution computer model.
  • Conducts on-site inspections and troubleshooting.
  • Responds to service requests and acts as a technical resource and engineering subject matter expert for Business Development, Project Management, Operations and the Business Unit
  • Assists in the preparation of an effective master plan and/or timely system improvement and replacement program.
What You'll Bring

Experience

  • At least three to five years of work experience as a Professional Engineer , preferably in a water and wastewater utility or engineering services company.
  • 3 years of Project Management experience.      

Education, Certifications and Liceneses

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, preferably Civil, Mechanical, or Environmental Engineering
  • Professional Engineering (P.E.) licensure.
  • Must maintain a valid driver's license.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • A strong commitment to, and working knowledge of, safety best practices  
  • Comprehensive understanding of engineering best practices in community water/sewer utility operations and construction.
  • Strong project management skills and demonstrated ability to manage the scope, budget, and schedule of projects.

  • Ability to exercise independent, professional judgement and expertise in areas of responsibility 
  • Demonstrated ability to develop clear and coherent written proposals or project reports, including feasible and accurate project schedules. 
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Capable of communicating with the public in tactful, courteous manner. Business acumen with ability to engineer balanced solutions
  • Experience utilizing standard procedures used in design and completion of projects, including construction techniques and equipment
  • Experience in administering consultant engineering contracts and/or construction contracts
  • Skilled in preparation of engineering plans, specifications, reports, estimates and contracts
  • Knowledge of principles, theories and best practices of engineering in all phases of project preparation and completion
  • Proficiency with engineering survey, drafting equipment and engineering modelling software
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, AutoCAD, and learn other internal software programs
  • Proficiency with SCADA, GIS, and asset management programs is preferred

  • May be required to sit for long periods of time, must be able to walk long distances, may work long and irregular hours under demanding conditions, must be able to operate a Company passenger vehicle or pickup truck, must have adequate vision and hearing that is required to communicate with personnel in person or by telephone and may require moderate lifting and carrying up 25 pounds.
