How much do per diem cdl driver jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 5, 2026, the average hourly pay for per diem cdl driver in the United States is $37.80, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $24.04 and $41.35 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Per Diem CDL Driver, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Per Diem CDL Driver, you need a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), a clean driving record, and knowledge of DOT regulations. Familiarity with GPS navigation systems, electronic logging devices (ELDs), and vehicle inspection procedures is typically required. Strong time management, adaptability, and effective communication skills help drivers manage varied schedules and interact with clients or dispatchers. These abilities ensure compliance, safety, and reliable service while meeting the flexible demands of per diem assignments.

How does the scheduling and workload for a Per Diem CDL Driver typically differ from a full-time driver?

Per Diem CDL Drivers generally work on an as-needed basis, which means their schedules can vary greatly depending on employer demand. Unlike full-time drivers who have set routes and regular hours, per diem drivers may be called in for specific shifts, to fill in for absences, or for seasonal peaks. This flexibility can be ideal for those seeking work-life balance or supplemental income, but it also means that consistent hours are not guaranteed. Effective communication with dispatchers and adaptability are key to succeeding in this role.

What is a Per Diem CDL Driver?

A Per Diem CDL Driver is a commercial driver who is paid on a daily basis, often for temporary or as-needed work, rather than being a full-time salaried employee. 'Per diem' means 'per day' in Latin, and in this context, it refers to daily compensation or reimbursement for expenses while on the job. These drivers typically hold a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and may transport goods, materials, or passengers, filling in for absences or during busy periods. Per diem drivers often enjoy flexibility in their schedules but may not receive the same benefits as full-time drivers. They can work for trucking companies, delivery services, or other businesses that require commercial drivers on a flexible basis.
