What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a patient advocate, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Patient Advocate, you need a strong understanding of healthcare systems, patient rights, and relevant regulations, often supported by a degree in health services, social work, or related fields. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems, case management software, and sometimes certification such as BCPA (Board Certified Patient Advocate) is valuable. Outstanding communication, empathy, problem-solving, and negotiation skills help you effectively support patients and collaborate with healthcare teams. These skills are crucial for ensuring patients' voices are heard, their concerns are addressed, and their care experiences are improved.

A patient advocate, sometimes referred to as a patient care advocate, supports patients and their families, working to get them the best care available. As a patient advocate, your responsibilities and duties include helping clients understand their treatment options and working with doctors to get the client the best care possible, assisting your client to navigate their insurance coverage, and providing general support to the family throughout the healthcare process.

What is a patient advocate?

Patient advocates are professionals who assist patients in navigating the healthcare system. They help patients understand their diagnoses, treatment options, and medical bills, and often facilitate communication between patients, families, and healthcare providers. Patient advocates may work independently, for hospitals, or for insurance companies, always with the goal of ensuring that patients' rights and interests are represented. Their support can be especially valuable when dealing with complex medical or insurance issues.

What are some common challenges patient advocates face when navigating healthcare systems for clients?

Patient Advocates often encounter obstacles such as complex insurance processes, communication barriers between patients and healthcare providers, and coordinating care among multiple specialists. Advocates must be persistent and resourceful in resolving these issues while maintaining patient confidentiality and trust. Successfully overcoming these challenges requires strong problem-solving skills and a deep understanding of healthcare policies and patient rights.

Job description

You went into healthcare to take care of people, at Axil Health that is exactly what you'll do.
About Axil Health
We partner our clinical pharmacist with physician practices and build care teams around them; navigators, technology, and the infrastructure to actually manage patients between visits, not just during them.
We currently support over 9,000 patients across 25+ practice locations, including partnerships with Corporate Medical Providers across the Carolinas and Virginia. Our outcomes are real- our monitored patients reach blood pressure goals, achieving measurable A1C improvement, and documented cost savings.
The principle we stand behind is built on: take care of the patient first, and the results follow.
What you'll do day-to-day:
  • Reach out to your assigned patients on a structured schedule - some weekly, some monthly - based on their condition and risk level
  • Review remote monitoring dashboards and proactively contact patients when data is trending in the wrong direction
  • Help patients navigate real-world barriers: late refills, insurance questions, transportation, specialist coordination, copay assistance
  • Document patient interactions using AI-assisted tools (less typing, more connecting)
  • Escalate clinical concerns to an on-team pharmacist using clear protocols
  • Assist to enroll newly eligible patients into the program

Why this work matters
Chronic disease is won or lost between appointments. The details between appointments matter just as much as the information shared during the appointment. We catch when a patient's blood pressure is quietly trending up, whether they understand their new medication, or if a refill is stilling uncollected due to cost or transportation; encouraging our patients engagement in their own care.
Requirements
Qualifications Needed:
  • Certified Medical Assistants (CMA, CCMA, RMA, NCMA, or equivalent national certification)
  • Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) with an active NC license
  • Registered Nurses (RN) looking to step away from bedside and into a structured, relationship-based model
  • Pharmacy technician (CPht)

What you get:
  • Compensation discussed at interview
  • Company-sponsored insurance options: Medical, Dental, Vision
  • Company Paid Short Term Disability
  • Long term Disability
  • Company Paid Term Life Insurance with add-on Options
  • Two 401(k) program options
  • 15 days PTO that increases with tenure
  • Paid holidays + 2 additional floating holidays to use at your discretion
  • Quarterly performance bonuses tied to quality and outcomes metrics
  • Paid training that supports how you learn

Schedule: Monday-Friday 8am- 6pm (Flexible to support life's needs) Overtime offered for Saturday and Sunday
36+ hours/week required for full-time benefits eligibility. IN-PERSON ROLE
Career path: Care Navigators at Axil have moved into team lead roles, training and onboarding positions, process improvement, and IT.
About Axil Health
At Axil Health, we're not just talking about the future of healthcare - we're creating it. We combine cutting-edge patient monitoring technology with compassionate, personalized care to transform the lives of those with chronic conditions. Our integrated approach brings together doctors, pharmacists, and care specialists like you to provide unparalleled support to our patients.
About The Team You'll Join
We're a company of thinkers, doers, problem-solvers, builders, and patient advocates. People who see a gap and close it, not wait for someone else to.
  • You'll work cross-functionally, connected to a mission that touches clinical operations, technology, and patient care at every turn.
  • At Axil Health, you join a small team where your work is visible, your voice counts, and your judgment shapes how things get built, not just how they run.
Who Does Well Here
People thrive at Axil Health when they're motivated by the actual outcome of the work: helping patients manage chronic conditions and stay connected to care between visits. This isn't a fast-growth tech culture chasing headcount. We are a small, mission-driven team where individual contributions are visible and accountability matters.
The strongest fits tend to be people who:
  • Care about the patient behind the data point. Whether you're in clinical operations, care navigation, or support functions, the work touches real people managing real health conditions.
  • Are comfortable with ambiguity and building, not just maintaining. We're still defining processes in many areas, so people who can bring structure without waiting to be told exactly how do well.
  • Communicate directly and kindly. We value people who raise issues early, give and receive feedback without drama, and treat colleagues with respect even under pressure.
  • Take ownership without needing constant oversight, self-direction matters as much as collaboration.
  • Stay curious. Healthcare and patient monitoring technology both evolve quickly, and people who keep learning keep up.

Why You'll Love Working at Axil Health:
  • Make a tangible difference in patients' lives every single day
  • Work with a passionate team that feels like family
  • Gain experience with cutting-edge healthcare technologies
  • Enjoy a supportive work environment that encourages professional growth
  • Be part of a company that's shaping the future of healthcare
  • Competitive salary and benefits package
