What is a party chief?

A party chief performs a variety of surveying and planning duties as part of a construction team. In this job, you typically oversee the surveying crew by collecting site data and preparing reports for clients, contractors, and engineers. This career requires a mix of qualifications, including construction-related experience and skills. You should have some postsecondary training in construction, as well as experience working in surveying. To thrive as a Party Chief, you need a solid understanding of land surveying principles, experience with field data collection, and typically an associate's degree in surveying or a related field. Familiarity with surveying equipment (such as total stations, GPS units, and data collectors) and software like AutoCAD or Trimble Business Center is essential. Strong leadership, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for managing a team and ensuring accurate results. These skills ensure that projects are completed accurately, safely, and efficiently, which is critical for construction, engineering, and mapping projects.
