General Summary

KSI Engineering, Inc. is looking for a Survey Party Chief who is interested in joining a multi-disciplinary team focused on serving relationship-based clients and internal business units across multiple states, with this specific position located in Tioga, North Dakota.


KSI is a privately-owned, sole-source service provider of engineering, surveying, fabrication, construction, and maintenance services to multiple industries including upstream oil and gas production, natural gas treating and transportation, refining, co-generation, heavy industrial, and all types of pipelines. Prioritizing innovation and technology integration with our day-to-day operations, we are committed to providing best-in-class services to customers while developing and cross-training our team.


The Survey Party Chief will be in responsible charge of a field crew in the execution of project-based surveying responsibilities for a variety of industries, with internal and external customers. Successful candidates will exhibit proven experience in land surveying, laser scanning, deliverable production, crew development, and process-based workflow integration. Outstanding candidates should possess strong communication & interpersonal skills, have experience troubleshooting equipment & site-specific issues, and be interested in mentoring supporting resources.


Minimum Experience, Education, and Capabilities

  • Must have experience functioning as a Survey Party Chief under the direction of a PLS (Professional Land Surveyor)
  • 5+ years of survey industry experience required
  • Experience using, troubleshooting, & maintaining survey instruments including Total Stations, GPS/GNSS, etc.
  • Survey experience in & around active construction sites
  • Proven capabilities of mentoring & developing supporting resources
  • Must have a valid driver’s license in North Dakota


Essential Job Functions

  • Take responsible charge of field activities associated with survey department scope
  • Function as the Party Chief (i.e. “crew lead”) of 2 or 3-man survey crews; direct and oversee supporting resources in the field environment
  • Provide direction to supporting chainmen, instrument men, and other supporting resources to successfully complete assigned field survey scope on a day-to-day basis
  • Collaborate with the Survey Team Lead, Department Director, and other resources to develop and refine department processes and best practices
  • Identify improvement opportunities and communicate action plans to stakeholders
  • Develop relationships with clients as well as internal stakeholders
  • Perform all duties expected of an experienced Survey Party Chief


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong understanding of land surveying
  • Ability to perform a variety of survey scope, including boundary, topographic, construction staking, etc.
  • Experience with laser scanning preferred
  • Experience with aerial surveying preferred
  • FAA Part 107 certification preferred
  • Working knowledge of construction
  • Strong interpersonal & communication skills
  • Ability to read and write in English
  • Ability to comprehend and communicate instructions in English
  • Ability to communicate with employees and various business partners in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Proficient knowledge of a variety of survey instruments
  • Knowledge of technology (iPads, cellphones etc.)
