What jobs make $500,000 a year?

Chief of Staff roles can reach or exceed $500,000 annually, especially in large corporations or executive-level positions, often including bonuses and stock options. Other high-paying jobs in this range include senior executive roles such as CEOs, CFOs, and specialized medical or legal professionals, which typically require extensive experience, advanced skills, and leadership responsibilities.

Is chief of staff a glorified EA?

A Chief of Staff is a senior leadership role responsible for strategic planning, project management, and coordinating executive activities, often overseeing multiple departments. Unlike an executive assistant, whose primary focus is administrative support, a Chief of Staff has broader responsibilities that include decision-making and organizational leadership. While both roles require strong communication and organizational skills, the Chief of Staff position is typically more strategic and leadership-oriented than a traditional executive assistant role.

How much is a chief of staff paid?

The salary of a chief of staff varies depending on the industry, company size, and location, but typically ranges from $80,000 to $200,000 annually. Senior chief of staff roles in large organizations or corporations can earn higher compensation, often including bonuses and benefits. Experience, skills, and the scope of responsibilities also influence pay levels.

What does a Chief of Staff do?

A Chief of Staff is a senior executive who supports the leadership, often the CEO or other top executives, by managing key initiatives, facilitating communication across departments, and ensuring strategic priorities are executed. They often act as a trusted advisor, coordinating projects, preparing reports, and representing leadership in meetings. The role varies by organization but generally focuses on improving efficiency and helping leaders focus on high-impact activities.

What Does a Chief of Staff Do?

As a chief of staff, you are the right hand of the CEO at your company. Your job duties are to act as a sounding board for the CEO regarding new ideas and strategies, communicate with other executives, clients, and stakeholders, take meeting notes and attend meetings on the CEO’s behalf, and help the CEO prioritize their time. The chief of staff (COS) role is different from the chief operating officer (COO) in that the COS reports directly—and primarily—to the CEO, not to the board, other executives, or major stakeholders.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Chief Of Staff, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Chief Of Staff, you need strong leadership, strategic planning, and organizational skills, often supported by a bachelor's or master's degree in business, public administration, or a related field. Familiarity with project management software, CRMs, and data analysis tools, as well as experience managing cross-functional teams, is highly valued. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and discretion are essential soft skills for building trust and navigating complex organizational dynamics. These capabilities enable Chiefs Of Staff to drive alignment, optimize executive effectiveness, and ensure that organizational priorities are efficiently executed.

What exactly does a chief of staff do?

A chief of staff is a senior executive who supports the CEO or other top leaders by managing daily operations, coordinating strategic initiatives, and facilitating communication across departments. They often handle project management, prioritize tasks, and ensure organizational goals are met efficiently. Strong leadership, organizational skills, and familiarity with business tools are essential for this role.

What are some common challenges faced by a Chief of Staff when supporting executive leadership, and how can they be navigated?

Chiefs of Staff often face the challenge of balancing multiple high-priority projects while ensuring executive leaders are well-informed and focused on strategic goals. Navigating this requires strong organizational skills, discretion, and the ability to anticipate the needs of both leaders and stakeholders. Chiefs of Staff frequently act as liaisons between departments, so effective communication and relationship-building are essential. Proactively managing time, setting clear priorities, and establishing trust with the executive team can help overcome these challenges and enable impactful support.

Job description

Personal Chief of Staff

San Francisco Bay Area | Presented by Private Staff Group

Private Staff Group is conducting a confidential search on behalf of a thoughtful, entrepreneurial ultra-high-net-worth family seeking an accomplished Personal Chief of Staff. This is not a traditional Chief of Staff, Estate Manager, Executive Assistant, or Family Office Director role. It is a unique opportunity for someone who can bridge those disciplines while serving as a trusted operational partner across the principals' business interests, family life, residences, travel, advisors, and special projects.

The Personal Chief of Staff brings together people, information, priorities, and resources so the principals can remain focused on what matters most. Rather than simply coordinating activity, this individual takes ownership of outcomes, develops thoughtful recommendations, and follows initiatives through to completion.

Core Responsibilities

  • Serve as the principals' trusted operational partner across personal and professional priorities, protecting their time through thoughtful planning and execution
  • Coordinate calendars, travel, meetings, family logistics, and special initiatives
  • Oversee residences, household staff, vendors, and service providers; establish practical systems, operating procedures, and service standards
  • Coordinate family travel, guests, events, and children's logistics
  • Liaise with attorneys, accountants, wealth advisors, security, and real estate professionals
  • Assist with operational budgets, reporting, and vendor relationships
  • Lead projects from planning through implementation, identifying opportunities to simplify operations

Ideal Candidate

  • Experience supporting UHNW principals, founders, entrepreneurial leaders, or family offices
  • Meaningful exposure to both corporate organizations and private family office settings
  • Exceptional discretion, professionalism, and emotional intelligence
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to think holistically across business operations, family priorities, residences, and personal affairs
  • Humble, service-oriented, and accountable with a low-ego approach
  • A builder of systems, processes, and trusted relationships
  • Seeking a long-term partnership with principals who value trust, loyalty, and excellence

Compensation

$300,000–$400,000, plus benefits, commensurate with experience and overall alignment with the role.

Private Staff Group specializes in recruiting executive, professional, and household staff for ultra-high-net-worth families, family offices, and private principals throughout North America. Qualified candidates are invited to apply in complete confidence.
