Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The mission of the School of Nursing is to enhance and improve the health and well-being of the people of North Carolina and the nation, and, as relevant and appropriate, the people of other nations, through its programs of education, research, and scholarship, and through clinical practice and community service. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Nursing has been the leader in nursing education in North Carolina throughout its history. Established in 1950, it was the first school of nursing in North Carolina to offer a four-year baccalaureate nursing degree program followed by the first master's degree program, the first continuing education program for nurses, first doctoral program, and first accelerated BSN option to students with college degrees. Today, the School is renowned for its academic programs, its research and its commitment to clinical and community service within state, national and global communities.
Position Summary
The Research Assistant will collaborate with Dr. Cathi Propper's investigative team, including the Project Director and research staff, to support social and educational research initiatives with participants who have English and Spanish as their primary language. Primary responsibilities include data collection, reviewing data for quality control and data processing.
Key Responsibilities:
Conduct classroom observations in participating schools and code observational data
Build and maintain relationships with school teachers and administrators
Administer age-appropriate assessments to child participants in both school and home settings
Schedule and conduct home visits with study participants in English and Spanish, including administering questionnaires to caregivers
Process and prepare research data for analysis
Regular communication with fellow research team members regarding data collection
Maintain the quality of the data collected and promptly report problems or complications to supervisors
Follow all IRB-approved protocols for data collection
Support the dissemination of research findings
Attend additional training or meetings, and participate in basic project planning as assigned by the supervisor
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor's degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Management Preferences
* Experience working with children in home and educational settings in order to collect data using developmental assessments and basic research methods; data will be collected during school hours with other data-related tasks outside school hours.
* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills in English and Spanish
* Ability to work as part of a research team
* Research experience in a social science research setting
Special Physical/Mental Requirements
The position requires travel to community locations, navigating walkways and stairs, and the ability to sit at child-eye level for up to an hour for multiple times daily.
