Key Responsibilities
  • Provide individual and group consultation, support, and direct service for students with an Autism Spectrum Diagnosis and/or other identified disabilities regarding academic advising and personal skill building in the areas of self-advocacy, social skills, and conflict resolution.
  • Assist in moderating and resolving individual student challenges within the academic and College community by collaborating with eligible students and their instructors to develop appropriate classroom accommodations, consulting regularly with students to assist them in building appropriate study strategies and self-advocacy skills and communicating with parents as needed.
  • Provide education and consultation to the College community in order to promote awareness and understanding of students on the autism spectrum and support the development and application of innovative pedagogical practices in support of students with disabilities.

Experience and Qualifications
  • A Bachelor's degree is required with preferred focus in Psychology, Counseling, Education or similarly related field.
  • 1-3 years of related experience required

Required Knowledge
  • Knowledge of Autism Spectrum potential accompanying issues such as executive functioning, time management, social skills, transitioning skills, sensory sensitivity, and verbal/non-verbal communication.

Required Skills and Abilities
  • To perform this job successfully, the Life Coach and Academic Support Specialist must demonstrate integrity and confidentiality; excellent interpersonal and communication skills; an appreciation and awareness of the need to provide and advise others regarding students on the Autism Spectrum.
  • In addition, the Life Coach and Academic Support Specialist should possess compassion, open-mindedness, patience, flexibility, tolerance, determination, and a sense of humor.
  • The Life Coach and Academic Support Specialist must possess a sincere interest and ability to work collaboratively with students, faculty, parents, and other staff to address complex disability issues in a post-secondary educational environment in a tactful, supportive manner
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with colleagues
  • Knowledge of the behaviors commonly associated with students on the Autism spectrum; a tolerance for anxiety; and the ability to let the student lead the dialogue, and introduce strategies along the lines of their interests.

Compensation
Starting salary will be competitive, based on the candidate's qualifications and experience.
Expected starting salary: $23.20 per hour. This is a part-time position approved for up to 24 hours per week between August 15 and May 15.
