Description
Basic Information
  • Reports to NE Branch Manager.
  • 24 hours per week.
  • $20.05 per hour.

Schedule
Sunday: 12:30 pm - 5 pm
Monday & Tuesday: 4 pm - 8 pm
Wednesday: 4:30 pm - 8 pm
Saturday: 8:30 am 5 pm
Location
North-East Branch: 6000 Wilson Avenue, KCMO, 64123.
Job Duties (Essential Functions)
  1. In the absence of the Branch Manager or Assistant Branch Manager, serves as the person in charge of tasks including but not limited to: addressing patron incidents, maintaining records through a ticketing system, supporting staff with challenging questions.
  2. Communicates with staff and manager.
  3. Works with Public Safety staff to assure patron behavior expectations are consistently followed.
  4. Communicates with facilities and meeting room services staff to assure meeting spaces are adequately prepared for use.
  5. Directs staff to assure efficient and effective customer service.
  6. Directs staff to assure service points are covered and staff receive appropriate breaks.
  7. Supervises AV desk, Customer Service desk, and Computer Lab on weekends and evenings.
  8. Provides effective reader's advisory services for all patrons.
  9. Provides circulation, account registration, and fine payment functions while maintaining effective, courteous working relationships with all library customers.
  10. Maintains book displays.
  11. Keeps abreast of current reading trends and resources.
  12. Keeps abreast of current library resources, trends, and developments in profession.
  13. Performs other related work and undertakes special projects as assigned.

Branch Specific Duties
  • North-East is a designated United States Village Post Offices. Employees at this branch additionally sell stamps and accept priority flat rate boxes and envelopes.

Requirements
  1. Demonstrated ability to meet and serve the public, working effectively with customers of all ages.
  2. Demonstrated ability to be a team player.
  3. Demonstrated ability to learn library operations, services and policies, including computer procedures.
  4. Demonstrated experience directing staff and workflow.
  5. Knowledge of literature and library research resources.
  6. Demonstrated ability to make decisions consistent with organizational policies.
  7. Must be able to access materials from shelves which may be overhead or those which may be below waist level. Must be able to work at a counter used for customer interactions.
  8. Demonstrated ability to organize daily work routines for location effectively.
  9. Many duties performed while standing and bending; ability to lift up to 35 lbs.
  10. Demonstrated basic computer skills and possess the ability to assist others with technology needs including but not limited to printing, scanning, navigating various websites, email accounts, etc.
  11. Demonstrated ability to follow oral and/or written instructions.
  12. Ability to understand and be understood in English is required. Additional consideration will be given to individuals that are proficient in any non-English languages utilized in Jackson County, MO, including Spanish, American Sign Language, Vietnamese, French, Arabic, and Swahili.

Required Education and Experience
  • High School Diploma / GED and 3 years of customer service experience required.
  • Library customer service experience preferred.
  • Diploma / GED may be substituted with 2 years of customer service experience.
  • Preferred previous experience with closing responsibilities such as key holder, floor manager, etc.

Work Environment
Work is performed at the North-East Branch. Workspace is shared with co-workers and patrons from a diverse socio-economic community.
