The Department of Nuclear Engineering offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in Nuclear Engineering. We are the only nuclear engineering program in the state of North Carolina and one of the premier departments in the southeast United States. Our purpose is to enhance, promote, and utilize the PULSTAR research reactor and associated facilities in an exemplary manner, leading to national recognition as a premier 1-MW Nuclear Reactor Program dedicated to research, teaching, and extension.
The PULSTAR reactor facility is available for use by research faculty and staff within the UNC system or at other academic institutions, and by governmental agencies and industries in the State of North Carolina and the Nation.

Essential Job Duties
The Department of Nuclear Engineering is seeking a highly organized and customer-focused professional to serve as a key member of its Business Office. In this role, you will support both the department and the Nuclear Reactor Program (NRP) by coordinating business operations, managing financial and administrative processes, and serving as a trusted resource for faculty, staff, students, and external partners. Your work will help ensure the smooth day-to-day operation of the department while contributing to an environment that supports teaching, research, and student success.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Coordinate administrative and business operations for the Department of Nuclear Engineering and the Nuclear Reactor Program.
  • Manage complex financial transactions, purchasing, reconciliations, and related business processes while ensuring compliance with university policies and procedures.
  • Maintain academic and graduate student records, supporting departmental programs with accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for faculty, staff, students, and external vendors by providing timely information, resolving questions, and facilitating effective communication.
  • Support program management activities and departmental initiatives by organizing priorities, tracking deadlines, and ensuring business operations run efficiently.

Minimum Experience/Education

  • Proficiency with databases and spreadsheet applications to organize, analyze, and maintain business, financial, or program-related information.
  • Background supporting business operations within higher education, research, government, or a similarly complex administrative environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate multiple priorities and deadlines while maintaining accuracy, attention to detail, and timely completion of tasks.
  • Familiarity with enterprise business or financial systems (such as PeopleSoft, Banner, Workday, or similar ERP systems).
