About the Department
Founded in 1947, the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management (PRTM) is dedicated to improving the health and well-being of communities around the world by promoting active lifestyles and fostering positive connections between people and nature. We accomplish our mission through innovative and creative teaching, collaborative research, and focused engagement with local, national and global partners.
The department currently offers a total of three undergraduate degree programs, three graduate degree programs and two online degree and certificate programs. - Recreation and Park Management focuses on environmental education, outdoor recreation, parks planning and management and conservation of parks and other natural resource areas.

Essential Job Duties
The Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management (PRTM) in the College of Natural Resources (CNR) at NC State invites applications for Professor for youth development through recreation and sports. We are seeking an interdisciplinary scholar and visionary leader who has a demonstrated record of success and impact, and is nationally and/or internationally recognized for their distinguished scholarly contributions. The position is a 9-month appointment with approximately 45%-Research, 45%-Teaching, and 10%-Service.
Applicants may be considered for the Wayne Williamson and Bette Rose Distinguished Professor. The Williamson and Rose Professor will be a leader in research, outreach and teaching related to youth development through recreation and sports. Appointment at the level of distinguished professor is at the discretion of the Chancellor.
The Department seeks candidates who have a highly productive research, teaching, and engagement record that focuses on youth development through sport and/or recreation. The ideal candidate should bring a strong theoretical, methodological, and community engagement background as well as strong evidence of external support and student mentoring. Attractive research programs could focus on youth sport, physical activity, environmental education, out-of-school time recreation, nature-based recreation, and other topics of national significance. In addition, ideal candidates should be active participants and leaders in conferences and symposia within their areas of specialization. Ideal candidates should also be able to contribute to teaching and curriculum innovation at the undergraduate and graduate level, as well as recruit and support graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.
Candidates must show development of an established record of nationally and/or internationally recognized, externally funded research programs. Additionally, candidates must show a willingness and ability to publish in leading academic outlets and present at topically relevant conferences, both domestically and internationally, that will advance the significance of a critical, sustainable, and community focused lens on youth development, youth leadership, and youth engagement. Robust and sustained engagement with relevant youth-serving organizations is expected.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate ability to build on interdisciplinary strengths within the College of Natural Resources and partnerships with the College of Agriculture and Life Science's Department of Agricultural and Human Sciences, College of Humanities and Social Sciences' Department of Sociology/Anthropology and Department of Psychology, Poole College of Management's Department of Management, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, and College of Design's Department of Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning.
Responsibilities include:
- Expanding on an existing distinguished record of research, teaching and engagement;
- Leading collaborative external research funding initiatives;
- Instructing undergraduate and graduate courses, with a teaching load of two courses per semester in the fall and spring semesters;
- Contributing to curricular development within PRTM and alongside other relevant campus collaborators;
- Serving on and leading PRTM, CNR, and University-wide committees;
- Engaging in relevant professional and public service activities; and,
- Sustaining a robust network of community or industry stakeholders to which research and teaching outputs are disseminated.\

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience
- Applicant must have a Ph.D. in parks, recreation and tourism management, leisure studies, sport management or closely related social sciences.
Other Required Qualifications
- The successful candidate must have a PhD in parks, recreation and tourism management, sport management, or a related field. Candidates with degrees in other related fields (e.g., child development, human development, family studies, social work) are encouraged to apply if they have relevant experience in youth development. Applicants at the rank of Associate Professor, can only be considered with appointment at the rank of Full Professor contingent upon reappointment, tenure, and promotion guidelines of NC State University prior to the position's start date.

- Ability to play a catalytic role in building the research and engagement portfolio of the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management, as evidenced by a track record of collaborative research as both participant and leader
- A talent for, and evidence of working effectively and collaboratively with faculty, university administration, and other constituent groups within and outside the university
- Extensive experience in teaching and advising undergraduate and graduate students
- Demonstrated success in research scholarship, publications, and securing competitive grant funding to support a thriving research program
- Outstanding communication skills, including interpersonal, written, verbal presentation and listening capabilities.
