Job description

The Salvation Army Family Haven Shelter is looking for a Overnight Monitor for the cooling center. This individual will perform related duties to assist, monitor, and maintain order of homeless clients occupying the Cooling/Warming Center.
This is a full-time, 40 hours per week, $18.00 per hour.
Temporary seasonal position (June 16, 2026, to September 4, 2026).

Essential Functions
  1. Required to work various shifts including holidays in order to maintain 24-hour coverage for Cooling/Warming Center at all times. Conduct briefing with staff during arrival or departure of your shift. Ability to report accurate bed counts and client roster reports to Supervisor.
  2. Monitor clients to maintain order and assure safety of clients in building.
  3. Admit homeless persons to the shelter, complete intake, assign beds to occupants, and distribute supplies.
  4. Screen admissions for weapons and confiscate identified ones.
  5. Observe occupants' behavior and test for cause persons displaying disruptive behavior and suspected to be under the influence of drugs including alcohol.
  6. Maintain order and contact emergency medical services or police as needed.
  7. Ability to utilize crisis intervention skills to address conflicts and provide mediation as needed.
  8. Ability to deal with difficult clientele and work with various forms of mental health issues
  9. Complete shelter daily recordkeeping.
  10. Assist with the general cleaning of the building to include laundry responsibilities.
  11. Assure clients are settled for the night and awakened in the morning. These are awake positions.
  12. Advise clients as to services provided by The Salvation Army and other organizations.
  13. Assure and monitor the feeding of clients during mealtimes. Ability to document numerical data with accuracy.
  14. Assist with volunteer church groups.
  15. Maintain a positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that fosters good relationships with co-workers and supervisors. This would include but not be limited to such actions as: resolution of conflicts in a professional manner; courteous treatment of staff, visitors, and clients; respect of others' property and person; and professional and appropriate communication to and about clients, co-workers, and supervisors.

Minimum Qualifications
High school or equivalent diploma with three years of experience working in social service agency or five years work experience without a diploma. Higher education in psychology, social work, criminal justice, or other related field is a plus. Must be a team player, a self-starter, and perform well with minimum supervision. Good communication skills are essential, as well as an ability to work with diverse cultures. Computer skills are desirable.
Physical and Working Conditions
Must be able to perform the above essential duties. Most work will be indoors in a temperature-controlled environment. Must be able to provide transportation of clients as need per the Supervisor.
