To thrive as an Outside Salesman, you need strong sales acumen, negotiation skills, and industry knowledge, often supported by a background in business or sales. Familiarity with CRM software, mobile sales apps, and basic office productivity tools is important for managing leads and tracking sales activities. Exceptional interpersonal skills, self-motivation, and resilience help you build relationships and persist through challenges in the field. These skills and qualities are crucial for meeting sales targets, fostering client trust, and driving business growth in a competitive environment.

What is an outside salesman?

An outside salesman is a sales professional who primarily works outside of a traditional office setting, meeting clients and prospects in person to sell products or services. Their job often involves traveling to customer locations, building relationships, and generating new business through face-to-face interactions. Outside salesmen are typically responsible for managing their own schedules, identifying potential leads, and negotiating deals directly with clients. This role requires strong communication skills, self-motivation, and a good understanding of the company’s offerings.

How does an outside salesman typically balance travel and office work, and what strategies help manage their time effectively?

Outside salesmen often spend a significant portion of their time traveling to meet clients, attend industry events, and prospect for new business. Balancing travel with administrative tasks, like updating CRM systems and preparing proposals, can be challenging. Successful outside sales professionals usually rely on careful scheduling, digital tools, and prioritization to manage their workload efficiently. They also collaborate closely with inside sales teams and support staff to ensure customer needs are met and follow-ups are handled promptly.

Job description

Outside Sales Representative (Industrial Tools & Services)

Air Tools & Accessories
Deer Park, TX

Position Overview

Air Tools & Accessories is seeking a results-driven Outside Sales Representative to grow and manage accounts across the Greater Houston industrial market. This role is focused on developing relationships with plants, contractors, and maintenance teams by providing air tools, rentals, repair services, and replacement parts.

You will be responsible for generating new business, maintaining existing accounts, and acting as a trusted resource for customers needing fast, reliable tool solutions.

What You’ll Be Selling (Your Toolbox)

You will represent a full-service offering—not just products:

  • Major Brands: APT, MPT, Ingersoll Rand (IR), Chicago Pneumatic (CP), Dotco, Cleco, NPK, Ridgid
  • Core Products:
    • Impact wrenches, nutrunners, torque wrenches
    • Grinders (angle, vertical, die), drills (air feed & handheld)
    • Chipping hammers, rivet busters, scaling tools
    • Pipe threaders, rock drills, tampers, rammers
    • Air hoists, balancers, tuggers
  • High-Margin Revenue Streams:
    • Tool repair (all major brands)
    • Refurbished/rebuilt tool sales
    • Rentals (air tools & hoists)
    • Power sockets (1/2” to 3 1/2” drive, specialty configurations)
    • Consumables & accessories (burrs, chisels, hoses, lubricators)

This is a relationship + repeat business sales role, not one-off transactions.

Key Responsibilities

Business Development

  • Prospect and develop new accounts across refineries, plants, contractors, and industrial facilities
  • Identify opportunities for tool sales, rentals, and ongoing repair programs
  • Build a pipeline of high-frequency, repeat customers

Account Management

  • Maintain and grow existing accounts through regular site visits
  • Become the go-to contact for tool needs, breakdowns, and urgent jobs
  • Provide solutions that reduce downtime (huge value driver)

Sales Execution

  • Quote tools, repairs, and rental packages quickly and accurately
  • Follow up consistently to close deals and increase order size
  • Cross-sell accessories, sockets, and refurbished tools

Field Presence

  • Visit job sites, plants, and customer facilities regularly
  • Understand real-world applications (torquing, grinding, drilling, etc.)
  • Coordinate with inside sales and shop to ensure fast turnaround

Ideal Candidate

  • 2–5+ years of outside sales experience in:
    • Industrial supply
    • Tooling/equipment
    • Rentals (Sunbelt, United Rentals, etc.)
    • Oil & gas / plant services
  • Strong preference for candidates familiar with:
    • Pneumatic tools
    • Maintenance operations (MRO)
    • Industrial job site environments
  • Proven ability to:
    • Generate new business
    • Build long-term customer relationships
    • Close deals and hit revenue targets
  • Self-motivated, competitive, and comfortable working in the field daily

Compensation Structure (Recommended)

  • Base Salary + Commission

Territory

  • Greater Houston area (Deer Park, Pasadena, Baytown, La Porte, Channelview, etc.)
  • Heavy focus on plants, refineries, and industrial corridors

Why This Role Wins

  • Multiple revenue streams = easier to sell (tools + repairs + rentals)
  • High repeat business from industrial customers
  • Ability to build a book of business quickly
  • Small company = less red tape, faster decisions, higher earning potential
