Outbound Calling information

What is outbound calling?

Outbound calling refers to the process where a company or its representatives initiate calls to potential or existing customers. The purpose of these calls can range from sales, lead generation, customer surveys, appointment setting, to customer follow-ups. Outbound calling is commonly used in telemarketing and customer service industries. It requires strong communication skills, knowledge of the company's products or services, and the ability to handle rejection. Outbound callers often follow scripts but must also be adaptable to respond to customer needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an outbound calling representative?

To thrive as an Outbound Calling Representative, you need strong communication skills, persuasive abilities, and a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with customer relationship management (CRM) software, auto-dialing systems, and call scripting tools is typically required. Persistence, active listening, and resilience help individuals excel in handling objections and building rapport. These skills are essential for achieving sales targets, maintaining customer engagement, and representing the company professionally.

What are some common challenges faced in an outbound calling role, and how can they be managed effectively?

Outbound calling professionals often encounter challenges such as handling rejection, maintaining motivation during repetitive tasks, and achieving call targets. To manage these effectively, it's important to develop strong communication skills, resilience, and time management techniques. Many companies offer training, scripts, and support from team leaders to help callers stay confident and focused. Regular feedback sessions and team meetings also provide opportunities to share strategies and celebrate successes, fostering a supportive work environment.

Job description

About Mercor
Mercor's mission is to organize human intelligence to power the AI economy. We're a leading AI data company, building the layer between human expertise and frontier models. Millions of domain experts on the platform are paid over $4 million per day to train frontier AI models. Mercor's APEX benchmark family measures AI's real-world impact on professional work. Mercor Enterprise brings this same infrastructure to Fortune 500 companies: helping companies capture how their best people actually work, translating that expertise directly back into agents.
Mercor is creating a new category of work where expertise powers AI advancement. Achieving this requires an ambitious, fast-paced and deeply committed team. You'll work alongside researchers, operators, and AI companies at the forefront of shaping the systems that are redefining society. Mercor is a profitable Series C company valued at $10 billion. We work in-person five days a week in our San Francisco, NYC, or London offices.
About the role
As a Healthcare Data Partnerships Associate, you'll help build out Mercor's data partnerships engine in healthcare. An integral part of our strategy is partnering with health systems, payers, EHR vendors, and other organizations that hold large, high-quality healthcare datasets to access new kinds of data at scale.
You'll be on the front lines of outbound - calling, emailing, and prospecting to build pipeline - while supporting deal-building and relationship management with a wide range of organizations. This is a great fit for someone early in their career who wants to learn hardcore sales and deal-making in a fast-moving, high-ownership environment.
What you'll do
  • Run high-volume outbound: calling, emailing, and prospecting to build and fill the partnership pipeline from scratch
  • Help identify and prioritize potential data partners: health systems, payers, EHR vendors, life sciences companies, and other organizations with large, structured healthcare datasets
  • Support the partnership cycle - outbound prospecting, pitch development, and deal coordination - alongside senior team members
  • Book meetings and manage an active outreach cadence across calls, email, and LinkedIn to keep pipeline moving
  • Help draft and organize materials for data licensing and data sharing agreements, including pricing, access terms, compliance requirements, and usage rights
  • Contribute to building repeatable outbound processes, playbooks, and tracking metrics for the partnerships function
  • Support ongoing partner relationships, helping with renewals, check-ins, and maintaining trust over time
  • Work cross-functionally with product, engineering, and legal to support smooth data integration and regulatory compliance (HIPAA, de-identification, FHIR/HL7)
  • Help represent Mercor at digital health conferences and industry forums to build brand and relationships in the HLS ecosystem
  • Support market research and segmentation across provider, payer, BioPharma, and medical devices
What we're looking for
  • 2-4 years of experience in partnerships, BD, or sales, with real outbound / hardcore sales experience - you're not afraid of the phone
  • Track record of hitting outbound activity targets (calls, emails, meetings booked) in a fast-paced sales environment
  • Strong interest in healthcare data partnerships and eagerness to learn deal sourcing and negotiation
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, comfortable interfacing with external stakeholders
  • Familiarity with or strong interest in data licensing, IP deal structures, or de-identification frameworks
  • Willingness to build knowledge of the healthcare data landscape: EHR vendors, data standards (FHIR, HL7), HIPAA compliance, and data governance
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and comfortable managing multiple workstreams
  • Resilient and persistent - comfortable with rejection and high call/email volume
  • Self-motivated and comfortable with ambiguity in a startup environment
  • A team player who's excited to grow into a more client-facing, ownership-heavy role over time
  • Benefits
  • Bi-annual performance bonus structure
  • Generous equity grant vested over 4 years
  • Up to $15k Relocation bonus
  • $10K housing bonus (if you live within 0.5 miles of our office)
  • $1.5K monthly stipend for meals
  • Free Equinox membership
  • $200 monthly laundry reimbursement
  • $200 monthly personal wellness reimbursement
  • Health, Dental, Vision insurance
